The Nickel Defense

Most people say that we are going to play nickel defense a lot. So who is on the field when we play nickel defense. My understanding is that when a defense plays nickel defense that means an extra defensive back is on the field. Lets say that extra DB is Hall. So we have the two safeties, Hall, Breeland, and Culiver. That leaves six spots left. Im guessing that Robinson and Kerrigan will never leave the field for us. So the final four spots are Murphy, Smith, Paea, and Hatcher. So guys like Amerson and Francios should never see the field only if there is a injury.

Do I have this right guys?

Actually if we ever actually develop some depth, all of the defense should see the field. The reason why Kerrigan can never sit down is because we have had no depth.

no there isnt a lot of depth on this team and a lot of players will see playing time

IF we lose Robinson we are in serious trouble. Yes Compton could beat out Reilly but its the weakest group out of all the defensive positions.

Spaight,Howard,Plummer,Highsmith,Davis so there is competition this year

Spaight is not going to compete for a starting job this year. Hayward is just a ST player.

Compton is better than people give him credit for. He's very versatile. there's new coaches so he could end up starting this year. I think spaight will eventually be a good player but not this season

Getting off track here guys. I wanted to know who will be on the field when we are in a nickel defense.

we do not have quality depth on this football team hence we turn in last place finishes 6 of 7 years .

lets start at OLb where we have murphy and an unproven rookie in smith both ar step downs in talent from rak . who backs up kerrigan ? jeffcoat and tevardo williams , 2 career has beens

lets go to safety we have one guy who was a complete and utter failure at tampa and is 31 yrs old . we have another who has one career start , another who the broncos straight up cut after 14 starts , and a bust 4th rounder and 2 career special teamers

ILB we have robinson and a bunch of pedestrian guys

on offensive line we essentially will have 2 players with a combined 18 starts , a chubby back up og/c a turnstile swing tackle and another tackle who cant stay healthy and was lost like a fart in a whirlwind at tackle

our special teams are amongst the worst in the NFL and that screams lack of depth

you are delusional if you think we have quality NFL depth

If smith is a stud put him where kerrigan is and kerrigan where compton is. I don't want riley in the nickel because he can't cover. I don't want paea in there because I don't see him as a pass rusher. If hall gets injured we could see mitchell at nickel.

Not Hall.......unless somehow he overturns history, his best shot is either in the slot or at FS. He was once tried as the slot guy a got discombobulated there, that leaves FS, where I really don't believe he'll be given more than a modest trial there. His days at starting corner are past.

Martinez, the whole reason why we brought in Paea in here is b/c of his pass rushing skills for his size like Hatcher. There is no way Paea is coming out of the game in passing situations.

skinsdad, I am excited with our defense this year. There is a lot of talent and if we took Williams at #5 we would of been a top 10 defense in the league. Kerri, Murphy, and Smith will be fine at OLB. We actually have veteran safeties in Nacho and Gholsten. If Thomas or Johnson gives us anything its a huge plus.

With good QB play we will compete for the division this year.

it will be fools gold dean , fools gold . any injuries to key guys and it folds up like a house of cards

Paea fits the scheme. Solid player, vet, not that expensive. But his sack totals are lacking. 12 in his career I think. I'm very high on our linebackers but I think our d line is over rated.

Well if he's getting 6 mil then he might be over paid. Hopefully he has a career season this year and lives up to his contract
