you are hung up on position . we need a great football players and if its OG or NT or whatever then so be it

As we've discussed for a month now taking a guard at 5 may be safe but it's certainly not smart. A Honda Civic is a safe bet to be a reliable car, that does not mean it's smart to pay $50,000 for one.

doesnt apply . a pro bowl OG is very valuable for the next 10 years

I agree with Dad look past the position and pick #5. When it comes to improving our 3-100 team we take the best player available. Now if the best graded player is a Guard, NT, Safety or QB, etc I think we should take him.

Now of course in round you don't take that same position as in the 1st round even if it's BPA. Just my opinion.

this years draft isnt very deep in round 1 and it will be risky no matter who we take at # 5 , if we stay there .
i can live with most of the guys that are being projected to us

That is why Shelton is the safest player at #5. where is the down side to this guy?

My concern has less to do with his downside and more to do what/who you pass on by taking any NT at 5.

Shelton is the safest pick at #5. There is no down side to this guy. All the other guys have major risks involved. Gregory, raw and injury prone. Ray, too small just a speed guy, not even 6'2 240 pounds and a liability in run defense. Peat, not a good pass blocker. Scherff, many say he has to move to OG b/c of pass blocking issues.

These are all major issues. What is the major issue with Shelton?

not according to Mayock. He said that playing in the PAc-10 made him a fast player. I saw him make open field tackles at his size. Plus do you think Wilfork and Ngata have endurance? Nit picking there dad.

endurance dean endurance and yes they do have endurance or else they wouldnt be the games best

i like shelton , dont get me wrong but he does have issues in his game and the one most often mentioned is endurance followed by can he play 3 downs .

mayock isnt the end all be all on the draft either . i like him but he is wrong quite a bit too

Look at his stats Dad. Big sack numbers for a guy his size. Yes he is a 3 down player. The Bears are taking him at #7 there is no reason why we should take him at #5

We fight each year who we should pick and in the end our Redskins do something stupid. It wouldn't surprise me to see us draft Mariota.

i only am repeating the knocks against him in scouting reports for the love of god

and i am glad you KNOW who the bears are taking because most people dont KNOW

and for the millionth time i dont have an issue with shelton at 5 but to proclaim he doesnt have weaknesses in his game is stupid to say and even to believe.

damn didnt you learn from last season morgan debacle ?

Every player entering the draft has a risk. They can look flawless until they play in the NFL. You hit and you miss in evaluating college talent translating to the NFL. The successful franchises hit more times then they miss.

And how many Pro Bowl guards over the past 10 years were taken with the 5th pick in the draft? That remains the point.

I guess that is the point I have been trying to make. You don't have to take a G with the 5th to pick up a PB caliber G. You can use that pick to take a PB caliber OLB, DE, WR with the 5th pick. These guys are much harder to come by.

I do agree with dad in that this draft does not have a lot of top end talent. The 5th pick this year isn't as valuable as in most drafts. You can find comparable talent in picks 6-15. This is another reason why a trade back is ideal this year.

Yeah there is no question we picked a bad year to have the 5th pick. Not much you can do about that other than have a great personnel guy figure it out.

A paucity of game changing talent is why I would want to trade back. Theres so many holes on the team one first round pick won't turn it around. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, IMO.
