IMO, how can it be said they want to experiment with the 3-4? Barry Cofield proved using an athletic non-traditional NT failed in our version our the 3-4.

If we can't get one of the younger NT in FA, I would like to see Shelton. I believe he's motivated and accustomed being on the field often. He would finally be the piece we need to draw double teams, and oddly enough I do believe he may even get into the pocket often.

I know NT(because of the assignment) is high at 5, but I don't trust the pass rushers available to make any type of impact.

NT is a reach at 5 and Shelton won't be there in the second. But if we do find a partner to trade back, then Shelton would definitely be a target later in the 1st.

Agree..... However...lets see what F/A has to offer...Maybe we can plug that hole with a good Younger player with a decent contract to take NT off the list of Needs......

F/A will make a big difference in alot of teams needs prior to the draft

jy19. A target later in the first? Shelton is a top 10 pick right now. No way he is a reach at #5. The combine should just produce more good vibes for him b/c he is a great athlete for his size.

Many analysts don't have him ranked that high, more in the 15-25 pick range. Even if he's not there, there are a couple others (brown, Goldman) that are highly regarded. IMO, it would be worth the risk in a trade back into the teens to pick up another couple picks and still have a shot at Shelton. We need multiple good players, not just one.

I don't know how you cant get excited about Shelton. He is being compared to Nagata and Wilfork. He moves very well for his size and gets sacks for a NT. He will make everyone better on the front 7. Guys with his size and his ability don't come around very long. Brown and Goldman don't compare to Shelton and are not first round picks as of right now. If Marriota is there then I would listen to trade offers. If Cle offers their 2 #1's and there 2nd round then that could change things.

Dean, don't read anything more into my post than what I wrote. I never said I wasn't high on Shelton, nor did I say that the other two were as good. What I said is that many analyst feel he is not top 10 material and the other guys are considered good prospects. Nothing more.

most anyone we draft at 5 will be somewhat of a reach . the question is how much do you want to reach . we could do worse then shelton at 5 .

I agree. The 5th pick in this draft is a tough one. This is why I'm a big proponent of trading back unless Williams somehow falls to us. I think Ray would be a worse pick at 5 than shelton, only because of his size. Not only is he light, but his frame doesn't allow for a whole lot of growth. So he will always be an undersized OLB. This could prove to be a liability in run stopping.

I've been on the edge rusher train but I really can't argue with this post. Both Ray and Gregory look like big WRs, not LBs, to me.

There is no question NT is a huge need and a FA NT would be very very expensive. One of the issues I had with Shelton is he appears to have done his best work against average or bad centers, he didn't play nearly as well against the good OLs.

At least Gregory has a larger frame. Much like Murphy, it appears he has the ability to add 20lbs without affecting his agility. I wouldn't be upset if we took him with the 5th.

Both Gregory and Ray are huge risks to me. Shelton is the safer player out of all of them.

Yeah but the key is to manage the risk. That was an interesting comment by Dean worth discussing further. Is Shelton a safer pick than most?

the big issue with shelton is endurance so is it safer ? or is sherff at OG safer ?

the only real knock on sherff is in pass pro on the edge . many feel he will be very good at OG but its a risk for sure

But how do you take a OG at #5? IF the guy has questions about him about being a tackle that should raise up red flags. I have heard nothing about Peat.

I believe there is video of Mayock on NFL.com referring to Shelton being in great shape due to playing in the PAC-12. He had to play uptempo football. I mean nearly 100 tackles, 16 of them being for a loss is unreal for a guy asked to "distract"
