So that confirms they make it to Mirkwood and get captured by the elves in the first movie.
I could be wrong, but from what I understood, one of the movies was mainly the actual book while the other was backstory with Gandalf, Aragorn, etc....
That's why they are in it.

I've read different scenarios. This makes the most sense.
whoa...not sure if that makes sense. You would have "the hobbit" and then some other movie...I think it would be better to cut back and forth, just like LOTR cut back and forth between the books instead of doing them serially as written.
