Stance: Goofy
Just got back from the Scrimmage at Jackets dev camp. Got a metric assload of pictures to get through, but first, my thoughts.
Forwards:
Ryan Johansen - it's been said that he has been training as if the season didn't stop. It shows. He's noticeably bigger, more confident and I am not sure any puck left his stick towards the net without going in. Two beauties in the shootout drill. Plus he looks like he figures these guys will be his team one day. He was very composed and vocal with everyone out there.
Cam Atkinson - Dude is little. But at least 20mph faster than everyone else. He's done with the minors. Welcome to a full time gig in the NHL, kid.
Boone Jenner - He's bigger than I was expecting. Doesn't seem like a barn burner, but good hands. He's going to make it someday and will be traded at the deadline in two years to a team looking for depth. He'll probably make the club and be very solid.
Alex Aleardi - Who? Yeah, I said the same thing. But sweet mother of God, fast, a little angry, basically a ball of lightning on the ice. He got open in places you never expected him to be. Danced around Murray once like he wasn't even there.
Daniel Zaar - Late pick. I see why. Well, he'll have some good stories to tell when he's working at Blockbuster back in Sweden. Totally disinterested.
Seth Ambroz - Jared Boll's replacement.
Defence:
Ryan Murray - I know I said that if Yakupov went first that Howson should deal the second. And NO WAY he should have picked Murray. I am sorry. I take it back. Good GOD the kid is good. Making passes he had no business making, wicked fast shot. He was the second best player on the ice behind Johansen. And what's more in the 3-on-3 drills, Murray was hitting Johansen with stretch passes halfway up ice. At one point during puck control relay, he skated over and brought back water bottles for everyone who had already went. You can't teach that kind of stuff.
Dalton Prout - is big, and mean. He's the kind of guy who will finish his career with 7 points and 1000 PIM. Hands of stone, though.
Goalies:
Oscar Dansk - Not sure if he just had a bad day or what. But all this "positionally sound" and "even tempered" stuff I've been reading... I didn't see it. He threw his stick twice that I saw. He's got good movement low, but he was getting picked apart both high corners. And it clearly pissed him off. Atkinson flat out owned him.
Joonas Korpisalo - He looked pretty much exactly like his scouting report said. Comfortable, not overly aggressive. Lightning fast glove.
Anton Forsberg - He is going to force the Jackets to make a decision on Mason sooner rather than later. I thought he looked good enough to make the team out of camp if he kept it up, but I am not sure they'd want him to sit behind Bob. He will get a look this year, and I expect him to start next year, unless Bob lights the world up. He was incredible.
It was not a typical scrimmage, it was a series of five different games. And the losing team after each game had to do a punishment drill. Herbies where at each stop you do five pushups, crawling the length of the ice, a human centipede, etc. Clark kept things moving and they really seemed to be having some fun.
Place was PACKED.
