2 timeouts in the 1st qtr, 1 in the 2nd.It is only ever smart after the fact. If you didn't need your timeouts at the end of a half, taking them early is smart to get yourself into the right play or work on a crucial down.
However, if you have the ball in the last two minutes, no timeouts and you have to drive the field to tie a football game, you are a freaking idiot.
The matter is subjective depending on the need towards the end of a half. However, I think we burned through all 3 timeouts in the first quarter last week, or maybe that was the 3rd quarter. hell I do not remember, but I remember all 3 being gone very early. So early we got a delay of game or illegal substitution call against us because we couldn't call a time out.
That was 6 times outs and 1 penalty because we couldn't do the most basic function of football, get in and out of a huddle with 11 men and get lined up.
2 timeouts in the 3rd qtr, 1 in the 4th.
It's frustrating only because these are things that shouldn't be happening. Period.
However, that being said, I'd rather use them while you got them. You simply don't know what is going to happen later, and if you plan on holding onto the timeouts and take a penalty there, it kills the drive (maybe) and on top of that you might not even end up in a situation where you need them. So you go into the half, or the game ends, while you are still holding timeouts what does that get you? Of course, it would be nice to not have to use timeouts for these kind of silly things, but it is one of the reasons why you have them, too.
You can only make decisions based on what is going on in the game at that moment. Again, it's something that shouldn't happen and seems to happen all too frequently under Marvin Lewis. OC's have changed, QB's have changed, but getting players in and out on offense has been a constant struggle under his watch for some reason.
