Souray signed a five-year contract in 2007 that was supposed to see him in Edmonton through the end of the 2011-12 season.

Souray had four goals and nine assists in 34 games with Edmonton last season.

The Elk Point, Alberta native was selected 71st overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. He has played for the Devils, the Montreal Canadiens and the Oilers. His best season came in 2006-07 with Montreal, when he put up 26 goals and 38 assists for 64 points in 81 games.

The Oilers also placed goaltender Martin Gerber on waivers Thursday.

I'm a little surprised to see Darth Gerber on waivers...What happens if the Oil surprise a bunch of people and actually are in the playoff hunt and the Bulin wall is pulled away for a trial and possible jail time?

Since Souray has already been through waivers this would be re-entry waivers. Which I believe means his contract would cost the team who claimed him half his salary.

Don't re-entry waivers only click in once the regular season is underway?!? I think any team putting a claim in before Friday noon would be on the hook for the entire 5.4 million owed to Sheldon.

I thought it didn't matter since it was the second time the Oilers have put him on waivers. Why would the Oilers bother putting Souray on waivers again already knowing that nobody claimed him before? I would think they would want some team to pick him up, lower his salary or be able to put him in the AHL for the year.

That's how Oilers management rolls (low hanging fruit, but I couldn't resist). From the actual TSN story:

The other 29 NHL teams have until noon ET on Friday to put in a claim for either player.

If that doesn't happen, the Oilers have the option to send the veterans to AHL Oklahoma City. They could also subject them to re-entry waivers, where any team putting in a claim would only be on the hook for half of the salary -- with Edmonton paying the rest.

That might be the most logical option for Souray, who has two years remaining on his contract at US$5.4 million each.

I think Souray's cap hit is less than his actual salary. It's still steep though. I don't see any team claiming him.

You know what else is scary - Shawn Horcoff is making $5.5 million per season through the 2014-2015 season.

I apologize in advance to fans of the Isles/Oilers, but in all seriousness if you combined these two teams would they be legit cup contenders? I say no.
