From the very tip, you could the sense of urgency in the eyes of WV as they prepared to take on the #8th ranked Jayhawks. The Mountaineers knew that losing this game could jeopardize the entire season and make this teams accomplishments meaningless. After building and early 18-9 lead, Kansas stopped turning the ball over and got back to a 33-30 deficit at the half.
The 2nd half saw the Jayhawks go on a 10-0 run to take a commanding 40-33 lead by knocking down open 3 pointers. The Mountaineers then regrouped and kept the game close until Holton gets a put back to tie the game at 49-49 with 8:43 left in the contest. Then magic began to happen. Down 5 with 3:15 to play, Jevon Carter hit back to back 3's to give WV an improbable 60-59 lead. After a Mason layup, WV found itself down 1 with 8 seconds to play and the length of the court to score. A screen by newly inserted Chase Conner ( clearly a decoy and screener) opened up Jawan Staten for the highlight of the season. Staton drives the length of the floor spins and goes to the rim left handed and scores the winner. Kansas almost scored on a length of the floor pass at the end but a Perry Ellis miss handed WV its 20th and most important win of the season 62-61.
Staton was the star of the game as he willed this team to a win with 20 points on 9-18 shooting and 4 assists. Javon Carter was huge tonight knocking down big threes late to tally 13 points on 3-5 shooting behind the arc and 6 rebounds. WV shoots 8-21 behind the arc while collecting 22 offensive rebounds. That in my opinion was the reason they won the game. They mustered just enough offense with those 3's and rebounds to stay close and give themselves a chance. WV commits 10 TO's tonight to the Jayhawks 14 and gets 15 more FG attempts.
So what do we draw from this game? I think we now know that this team has a bunch of fighters and scrapers and if we get 60 + looks at the basket, we can score enough to give us a chance to win. The glaring weaknesses still plague this club but this game will certainly give them a much needed jolt of confidence headed down this tough closing stretch of games. I still believe WV needs another win on the resume to insure an invite to the dance but some will say their resume is good enough. Remember, the committee never likes putting a team in there who is backing up to the door. Nonetheless, a great win. A must win. And a win that the players desperately needed for their own peace of mind. Have a great day Mountaineer fans wherever your country road has taken you on this wintery evening.
