True, the Pads are probably getting more bang for their (very few) bucks.
The sudden weakness of the Bosox is frustrating, but '13 was pretty nice.
I kind of felt that letting Ells go without much of a fight (which I was fine with) was a signal that a bit of a rebuilding cycle was coming. Signing AJ seemed like a weird cheapout move, too, and not signing Salty may have been more of a punishment for sucking in the postseason than anything. They got an odd bunch together last season and many of them played over their heads, and it didn't seem likely to happen again.
Still, to be THIS bad...

My guess is they will vacillate and end up doing nothing.
