Getting your education paid for isn't exactly playing for free, but those who don't care about an education may not see it that way.

They pick their degree. I went to college with a lot of college athletes in my class. They got the same education as me, and at U of Iowa it was pretty darn good.
Kirk had those boys in class every day, sitting int the front row. It all depends on how much the coach cares about academics.
Which is why when Iowa fans whine about how much Kirk gets paid and he isn't winning a title I have to bite my lip. College coaching is about so much more then wins and loses.
What you do and how serious you take an education is up to you. Not a school. Every University has good programs and professors.
You choose to play football. No college makes you play football.
