When was Detroit ever in the Eastern Conference and how many teams were there at the time? Before they were in what is not known as the Eastern Conference, they were in the Campbell Conference. It was the exact same fucking thing only different name and a few different teams thanks to expansion and relocation. Maybe they never should have changed the names of the conferences and then people in Detroit, Toronto at the time, and Columbus now wouldn't realize they were in the Western Conference and wouldn't have a problem with it.

Perfect idea, we just rename all the conferences and then no one knows how far away from each other they are!

Exactly! I assume you sensed my sarcasm but in all seriousness I don't recall it ever being a concern when the Wings played in the Norris Division which was in the Campbell Conference. I remember when the conferences were renamed and all of a sudden Don Cherry made a big fuss asking how the Leafs could be in the Western Conference at the time. Did he not realize they were in the Western Conference all along just under a different name? And it wasn't long after that the Wings all of a sudden seemem to have a problem being in the western conference as well. Although the Leafs moving might have had more to do with that than anything.
