the playoff system isn't going to work.. it's much easier to argue who the 2 most deserving teams are, then it is to argue who the 4, 8, 16, most deserving teams are.. in the BCS you're arguing between maybe 1 undefeated team and two or three 1 loss teams.. when it goes to 4, it's not going to be uncommon for 2-loss teams to be in the argument and then you just have a big mess

Maybe, maybe not. At least there won't be play-in games like the NCAA basketball tournament which has half the damn teams making the tournament...

Pac 12 champ over non division winner

That's where they have to balance if conf champ is a bigger decider than SoS and overall record. Which is why it would be easier with 8 teams. Then you can get most of the Champs (sorry MWC and sunbelt) and some runners up.

only way it works is if they do go to 4 super-conferences and the winners all go to this playoff.. otherwise the number of teams in the argument are going to be out of control i think

i mean look at this year, you're probably going to have 5 teams with 1 loss or less arguing over who goes.. and everyone knows the SEC schools will be fighting that a 2 loss UGA/Bama/LSU/aTm are better than a 1-loss oregon or kstate.. and if you open that bag, how can you not include oklahoma who's only losses were to teams that were #1 at some point during the season.. or clemson who's 2 losses were to top 10 teams?

assuming SEC champ and ND are shoe-ins, you have 8 teams 'in contention' for 2 spots.. compared to a simple ND/SEC Champ in the BCS game

edit: obviously some could be eliminated rather easily (clemson), but you still ahve 8 teams with at least an argument that they belong

Quite simple, win your conference or else...become an also-ran. Since Oregon won't win their conference they would be out, if winning the conference carries more weight than win-loss. Of course what should carry the most weight in determining the selection has yet to be settled last I knew.

oh i agree w/ you.. you should have to win your conference.. but that's not how the BCS handled things last year.. plus how do you handle notre dame who doesn't have a conference to win?

who would be the playoff this year then in your mind?

ND
Bama/Georgia
Kstate
Stanford?

the uproar would be immense if stanford got in over a handful of other teams.. not saying i disagree w/ the 'win your conference or shut up' mind-set, but the uproar would be just as big in this case as it has ever been w/ a BCS championship game.. thus not solving the problem

In the KSU/OU case, it'd be KSU because they own the head-to-head against OU. And in the case of Stanford their loss to Washington could keep them out even with a conference title and 2 losses. The committee would then have to decide if another 1 loss team from the SEC like UF wasn't more deserving given UF's SoS.

you've narrowed down to florida and oregon then i guess which isn't bad.. assuming you keep a standard 'tie-breaker' to go by in teh futre too

1. W-L
2. Conference Champion
3. SoS

if they do it consistently like that, then i could see it working

I would think it would be ND vs Oregon, Bama/UGA vs Florida. Wouldnt that be interesting!
Also would be fucked up and if Oregon lost in Pac 12 Champ it would get really interesting...also if K-State won out.

They need an 8-game playoff, then it would be harder to complain.

Oregon isn't even playing for their conference championship and thus are probably eliminated unless chosen over UF, but UF had the stronger schedule.

Oregon still has one loss though even if not in Pac 12 Championship. So who would fourth team???? K-St only 1 loss team other than Oregon if they win out, then you have to choose between a bunch of two-loss team---UGA, LSU, Stanford, and so on.

K-State would be conference champion though...Oregon and UF aren't, so take the one with the best SoS obviously.

I think its going to be a combination of all of them.. with the nod given to the team with the better numbers IE: SOS, Rank at seasons end, etc

IMO, there should be a 16-team tournament

11 conference champions

5 highest remaining ranked teams

A committee determines seeds, higher seed get home field advantage until Championship.

Posted this on the NHL board a while back. Give me your thoughts and how we could tweak it:

16 team playoff. 1st round starts one week after the conference title games. Use BCS rankings to determine seeds. Teams seeded 1-8 host the first round games. After first round, teams are reseeded, just like Stanley Cup Playoffs. Quarterfinals played at the Cotton, Outback, Capital One, and a rotation of the 4 BCS sites. Example: this year would be Fiesta, then Sugar next year, etc... Semifinals are played at the 2 BCS sites not in line for title game. Title game 2nd week of Jamuary. Other bowl games are played for non-playoff qualifiers.

Rank was mentioned as a factor at the July meeting. I think they really want to keep the pollsters out of it, much like the NCAA BB tournament.
