No matter what potential deal we have talked about with DJ since the summer time, he can’t wrap his head around how or why teams would value expiring salary at the trade deadline when it’s clear they won’t contend.

I don't know. Laker fans love Caruso. If I could get Carter in the deal without giving up Reaves, I think that's the better path. There will be other interest in Caruso, so I doubt he would be available in such a deal.

Without there being competing interest in LaVine (maybe the Sixers?), the Lakers should push to keep as much draft capital and key rotation players out of the deal (or just avoid it altogether preferably).

Agreed but Caruso is more switchable and gives better diversity in terms of the guys he can guard because of his size. Carter is listed 6’1’’. I’d be surprised if he was really 6 feet.
