Herbert Perry--as Ben Kenobi would say, "Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time."

Who expected him to hit 22 homers in 2002? That was one of those random seasons you cannot predict.

Would be nice if Texas could find some players like that and hit a homer on a guy that had zero expectations going into a season....Napoli in 2011 was one of those rare gems.

Perry's best years were in the years he was used the most and his worst years were the years he played the least. He never seemed to have a problem with overexposure like some guys. Perry reminds me of the one he backed up--Hank Blalock. It was such a shame to see Blalock fall in love with pulling everything and going for the long ball so much that it ruined his career. Hank still hasn't turned 34 yet.

Hank had such potential, but I personally think Buck fucked his head by not protecting him against lefties early in his career.

So I remember when a lot of us really wanted Brian McCann. Damn I was wrong on that one...year one in the bronx has been horrifying for him.

Sometimes guys can't find success in NY like they can elsewhere. Remember the difference in Rogers there and here. Look at A J Burnett's numbers there and elsewhere. If we had signed McCann this past offseason he might have had a completely different year. That might be the case with Beltran as well.

Good point. I guess we'll never know. I know I thought he'd have a big year being left handed with the short porch in RF in NY.

Good answer. I forgot about him.

I really like Kouz. But his back has been a problem for years and years. Don't see him as even being in the bigs next season.

Love to see it. But you can't count on this man IMO.

The Rangers are counting on Beltre. If he gets hurt we will be in deep shit, no matter who replaces him. I don't even want to think about it.

Two back operations, one recently, doesn't bode well for him.

You can't replace Beltre at least for a long long time. Many qualities in him that make a replacement hard to find

Isn't Ryan Rua the best answer if Beltre is out for an extended period.

Not really. Too green. Rosales will take over. What do we have to lose? No reason to interrupt Rua's development.

So I remember when a lot of us really wanted Brian McCann. Damn I was wrong on that one...year one in the bronx has been horrifying for him.

I remember reading an article recently where they interviewed someone from the Braves (coach or former player, can't remember exactly) who knows Brian McCann very well. He said that he knew the minute McCann signed that contract he would struggle mightily in NY. He said that McCann's personality made him the absolute worst fit possible for NY out of any major leaguer he could think of. He said that McCann even once told him how he even knew himself that he wouldn't do as well in such a high profile high pressure northern atmosphere. This guy fully expected McCann to sign with Texas because he thought it was the perfect fit for such a laid-back southern guy. He was totally shocked when he heard he chose the Yankees.

It doesn't really totally account for his mediocre season, but it is interesting nonetheless that someone who is close to McCann predicted pre-season that he would struggle there.

I don't recall any mention of Texas even pursuing him. I wish they had.
