I think we can safely say that the Rangers importance and prestige that they once held among baseball folks in Japan has gone by the wayside. That was the case several years ago, but there is no evidence of that being the case any longer. The same thing happened with the Caribbean players about 20 years ago or more. The rules have changed as well.

Kudos to Sasaki and his agent for letting most all these teams know a couple of days early.

I wonder how the Sasaki news affects the rest of what we need to do. It will make it a little more difficult to trade away a starting pitcher to free up money for a closer. They may have to trade for a closer.

Taveras is still an ill fit for this team. We need a RH OF to platoon at times with Carter. They could always go cheap and roll with Duran while trading Taveras to free up some money for a closer.

If they are going to use Gray as a closer that decision needs to be made now, so he can be prepared.
with real closers available out there including Yates i just can't see why we would experiment with Gray. there is no evidence that he would work out there.

now our options at SP are deGrom, Eovaldi, Bradford, Mahle and Rocker

at RP we would have Gray at LR, spot starter, Shawn Armstrong, Milner, Webb, Martin and Garcia with open spots for a quality setup man and a closer. Dunning opens in AAA. if nothing else we re-sign Yates as our closer and David Robertson as our 8th inning man. and we still have more than enough to sign Randal Grichuk as the 4th OF'er and trade Taveras for a bag of batting practice balls and still stay below the cap

The money they have left may not be enough to sign a quality closer.

I imagine they will keep Gray in the rotation and trade Taveras so they can sign Yates, unless they trade for a closer.

From Jamey Newberg:

Sarris’s figure is based on the FanGraphs RosterResource function, which now has the Rangers’ “Estimated Luxury Tax Payroll” at $234,921,667. Cot’s Baseball Contracts calculates a roughly equivalent $234,535,667. Spotrac pegs it at $228,471,666.

If the first two calculations are accurate, that would leave Texas approximately a CBT cushion of about $6 million. If the team is insistent on staying below that line, that’s not going to get Yates, or even Robertson. And that’s without considering the idea of one more right-handed-hitting outfield bat as well.
Depending on which of these resources is right the Rangers have either $6 million left before the Luxury Tax Threshold or $13 million. They would not use all of that in the offseason. They would save some for a mid-season trade. So probably more like $3 million or $10 million.

Jeff Wilson says the Rangers were informed yesterday about Sasaki.

I would really like to sign Tanner Scott and have the closer position nailed down for 3 or 4 years. That would be nice for a change. That would most likely force a trade of either Mhale or Gray, though.

That would mean the first starters to use in case of injuries would most likely be Leiter, Teodo and Acker. I am fine with that. I just don't think the Rangers would be.

Unless they can get creative.

The Blue Jays, Padres, and Dodgers are the finalists for Sasaki.

This is what Jamey Newberg had yesterday.

Bubba Thompson is going to play football. He has enrolled at South Alabama and is planning on playing as a walk-on. He was a quarterback in high school.
