Are you thinking his defense is better in the AL? Why are you shocked he signed in the NL?I am just shocked that an NL team signed him. His defense is horrible

How does that effect his defenseThe AL has a DH and the NL doesn’t?

If he’s putting up negative -2 WAR on defense and 4 WAR on offense it would make sense to have him at DH where he could be a 4 WAR player instead of RF and be a net 2 WAR player.
Makes sense to me

Could NL Teams Be More Willing to Sign Nick Castellanos in Hopes of Future DH Rule?
Iwas responding to your comment that his defense was horrible and you could not believe a NL team signed him. I mentioned nothing about offense. How does that effect his defense

I see Heineman as having a chance at a career path similar to Santana's. He will probably kick around the league for a few years and then some team will, out of necessity, give him some extended playing time and be pleasantly surprised at what he accomplishes at that point.I’m curious to hear some other point of views on Scott Heineman.
He has dominated at A, AA, and AAA last year. I don’t see any reason he couldn’t hit
.285/.360/.445 putting up an .805 OPS
Steal 15 bases, 15 HRs, 30 doubles and score 80-90 runs. I think he could put up 3 WAR.
Maybe be a player a little better than Adam Eaton but not quite as good as Whit Merrifield.
What do y’all think?
He hit .347 .415 .591 1.006 in 200 AB in AAA last year
He may be able to hit .300/.370/.550 .920 with 20 homers but I’ll stick the before prediction lol

I wonder if Scott Heineman will end getting a lot of playing time in Center Field with Santana being more of a utility player who plays all around the field and gets his 500 ABs
How does anyone know how he could play at 1B though? I wonder how many good first basemen would be bad at 3B or the OF.That doesn’t effect his defense..
But it does effect his defense WAR which would go from -2 in the field to a 0 at DH.
I never said anything about his actual defense skills being better in the AL
I said I was shocked an NL team signed him.
The reason being is there is no DH in the NL which is where the guy probably needs to play considering his defense.
I’m honestly not sure what’s so hard to understand about that.
It seems like you just want an argument or you’re really dense.

I was thinking of another quote about 1B. As Elaine Benes told Keith Hernandez:He maybe able to be a decent first baseman. If the rangers signed him it would have been worth the try.. if it didn’t work they could have moved him to DH the last 3 years. The reds are planning on him playing RF though.
Reminds me of Moneyball
Billy Beane: We want you at first base, it's not that hard. Tell him Wash'
Ron Washington: It's incredibly hard.
It is because in the NL he HAS to play defense. In the AL he doesn't when he is the DH. At least in the AL they have an option with him.Iwas responding to your comment that his defense was horrible and you could not believe a NL team signed him. I mentioned nothing about offense.
My guess is they were decent at other positions or were primarily 1b to begin with because of speed. Many used to be big guys. How does anyone know how he could play at 1B though? I wonder how many good first basemen would be bad at 3B or the OF.
We did have a guy who some of us nicknamed Lawn Gnome while he played 3B. He seemed to do okay when moved to 1B.My guess is they were decent at other positions or were primarily 1b to begin with because of speed. Many used to be big guys.
It could be that the Reds are hoping he opts out. Maybe they have someone coming up and don't mind him leaving. When the Rockies signed Arenado, his opt out was their idea. Maybe Castellanos' opt out is the Reds idea. That way they can give him the 4th year that he wanted and have a decent chance that they won't have to pay all of it.The Castellanos contract is definitely a different one can't see I've ever seen one structured quite like that before. About the best the Reds can do is get one really good year out of him before he opts out to get a longer/bigger contract (or so he thinks).
Maybe they have someone coming up and don't mind him leaving.
