One Hidden Gem on Each Top 25 College Football Team in 2017

23. Texas: Kyle Porter, RB

  1. 2016 Stats: 46 carries, 205 yards; two receptions, 10 yards

D'Onta Foreman averaged nearly 30 carries per game last season, leaving next to nothing for the rest of the Longhorns depth chart. In fact, if we exclude the game against UTEP in which Foreman did not play, Texas running backs not named Foreman accounted for just 80 carries in the entire season—42 for Chris Warren III and 38 for Kyle Porter.

With Foreman off to the NFL, both of those backs should be headed for a massive boost in opportunity. Of the two, Warren figures to be the starter, which leaves Porter as the hidden gem who could put up big numbers.

The 4-star recruit from Katy, Texas, only averaged 4.5 yards per carry, but the fact that he got a touch in almost every game as a true freshman speaks volumes for his potential in this offense. If nothing else, he can be the back who makes plays in the passing game. Two receptions isn't much to write home about, but it's more than the zero that Warren had last year.

Says Abdul Adams should be our #1 back this year. :L

Writer clearly knows nothing about his subject matter.

Tim Beck????
Didn't the horns learn nothing from Shawn Watson???

Beck was probably brought in for recruiting. He took 3 of the top 6 Texas kids and got them to Ohio state.

As a Texas fan, this is LAUGHABLE

The only reason he can be considered a "hidden gem" is because he's really the only RB that plays hurt. Warren can't stay healthy. Kirk Johnson can't stay healthy. This leaves Porter and two true freshmen, Toneil Carter and Daniel Young, as the only other RBs on the roster.

Warren is basically another Foreman in terms of size but he's not as fast. If he can stay healthy Porter won't see much of the field this year.

The Giant has awoken!

Damn straight-things are definitely looking better. Of course, we've been through the worst 3 years in UT history, and the worst 7 year run of suckage I've known in my lifetime.

On Orlando's raise: my first thought was, Damn! Has not even coached one game yet! Oh well, better win some games.

But glass half full guy here! Admin/donors have opened the checkbooks, re-doing and updating a bunch of facility shit, and top Texas recruits are showing interest again. Yes, yes. And that picture above is an awesome sight- 100,000 plus Longhorn fans sweating their asses off in 95 degree weather and having a great time.

Personally, I think Daniel Young may be the best young one (see what I did there :dhd:) of the other young running backs. Although ToeNail looked pretty decent as early enrollee RB at the spring game.

Texas has payed more people to NOT coach at Texas in the last 3 years than most programs have payed their staff to coach.

Between the 10 mil they are paying Strong to not coach and the 2.5 mil they are paying Houston for Herman to not coach, they are paying more for head coaches to NOT coach this year than we are paying Saban to coach, including his fat signing bonus this year.

I say paying Saban money for people to not coach is a good enough reason to LOL at Texas.

Hey, if Orlando doesn't work out, I hear Charlie Weis is looking for a gig.

meh

4th string, 6 tackles for his career

A loss on paper only......we need to drop about 8 more kids so this incoming class can max out at 25

Makes sense.
With Herman bringing in more/better talent, a 4th stringer probably isn't going to make it.
And the bolded is probably part of that plan. Which is the correct one.

Herman is probably going to find a way to get rid of ANY kid that doesn't buy into his plan and system. Even if they start.

Elliot has a TON of potential tho.......this DOES hurt depth but if he's not willing to work or buy in, SEE YA KID......

4th string, that's a stretch. He was probably going to crack the 2 deep, lets not kid ourselves this one kinda hurts.

Maybe Herman is on "The Saban Plan".
Cut guys knowing he has better coming in.

I have never had a problem with that kind of thinking and feel like more Coaches should adapt better to today's reality

You heard it here first. Kansas is the most improved and wins 3 Big 12 games this year. I'm going with Texas Tech, Baylor and Iowa State as their wins. And another 3-4 close games they lose.

But, WTF do I know. I had Sparty winning the B1G East last year.
