let him be situational or late 4th quarter (game out of hand either way), but not so much reps he makes too many mistakes. i'd think situational starts with 3rd and longs?

I would say hell yes but it would probably end up in a 'roughing the passer' penalty.

I agree. I don't give a crap about ST value here....just potential pass rush and sack value. Unleash the Tank!!!

Last year Jerrod-Eddy and Dobbs were nearly part of the rotation. I agree Tank needs some reps if he is healthy!! Go 49ers!! Defense is playing well, we need more pass rush!!

I can agree with this, on "3rd and long" insert Carradine too.

btw - there is a little problem if you activate Carradine as a situational player. you have to sit Dobbs or Jerrod-Eddie.

But ray still plays on a lot of passing downs which does not make obvious sense to me. Is it because he still occupies two blockers, freeing up other guys? Seems like we would do better with one of the youngsters in on obvious passing downs.

yeah, I'm ok getting a 'younger' guy in there on passing downs. We should keep Ray 'fresh' whenever we can, same with all the older guys.

The coaching staff is new(ish), which suggests the issue is with Carradine or perhaps that he is not cut out for a 3-4 defense. Remember, when he was drafted, the question was whether he would be a 265-pound OLB in the 49ers' scheme or a 299-pound DT/DE. It may be that the answer is that he's best as a 280-pound 4-3 defensive end. ... Eric Mangini seemed to suggest this week that the 49ers didn't have time to make any drastic changes to their defense as far as covering Jimmy Graham. That may be gamesmanship (coaches are notorious fibbers). But if it isn't, it means that the bulk of the work will be done by NaVorro Bowman and Michael Wilhoite, who haven't been all that good in pass coverage this year. Then Baalke is at fault for drafting someone who doesn't fit our scheme. He does NOT get much push so 'pressure' isn't his game. He looks slow in any case.
