August 5, 2013

RANK (LW*)TEAM/PLAYERRECORD/POINTSCOMMENTS

1 (1)Boston Red Sox
(BOS)

68-45-Boston nearly had two big back-to-back comeback wins at home.

2 (2)Tampa Bay Rays
(TAM)

66-45-Jesse Crain, when he gets healthy, will help an already strong Rays bullpen.

3 (6)Pittsburgh Pirates
(PIT)

67-44-The Pirates did nothing at the deadline, perhaps they'll add a bat in August.

4 (5)Atlanta Braves
(ATL)

67-45-Scott Downs is a solid addition to a pen that needed another lefty.

5 (7)Detroit Tigers
(DET)

64-45-Jose Iglesias should serve as the shortstop for most of the year, assuming Jhonny Peralta is suspended. 6 (3)Oakland Athletics
(OAK)

64-47-Alberto Callaspo is an underrated add at the deadline.

7 (4)St. Louis Cardinals
(STL)

65-45-St. Louis didn't do much at the deadline. They didn't need to.

8 (11)Cleveland Indians
(CLE)

62-49-The Indians are hanging around the division race still.

9 (10)Los Angeles Dodgers
(LOS)
61-49-The Dodgers' big deadline acquisition was Ricky Nolasco, of course. But they did add the defensively strong Drew Butera behind the plate.

10 (9)Baltimore Orioles
(BAL)

61-51-Bud Norris isn't a frontline pitcher, but he'll help the Orioles.

11 (8)Cincinnati Reds
(CIN)

61-51-Cincy has to start looking in its rearview mirror now.

12 (12)Texas Rangers
(TEX)

62-50-Texas opted against buying, as well as selling.

13 (16)Kansas City Royals
(KAN)

56-52-Kansas City is on a heck of a run, yet they haven't gained ground.

14 (13)Arizona Diamondbacks
(ARZ)

56-55-Trading Ian Kennedy makes some sense for Arizona, who has a lot of starting depth and needed the bullpen help.

15 (15)Washington Nationals
(WAS)

54-57-Mike Rizzo's extension is oddly timed, but he's earned it.

16 (14)New York Yankees
(NYY)

57-53-Adding Michael Young would've helped New York, even if he's not a great defender.

17 (17)Seattle Mariners
(SEA)

52-59-It's a bit surprising Mike Morse is still in Seattle.

18 (21)San Diego Padres
(SDG)

51-60-Ian Kennedy is a decent reclamation project for the Padres.

19 (20)Toronto Blue Jays
(TOR)

51-60-Signs the season's not going as planned: Teams were calling about Jose Bautista.

20 (18)Los Angeles Angels
(LAA)

51-59-J.B. Shuck made one of the best grabs you'll ever see.

21 (19)Colorado Rockies
(COL)

52-61-Jhoulys Chacin continues to pitch well.

22 (22)Chicago Cubs
(CHC)

49-62-The Cubs are likely to move Kevin Gregg in August.

23 (25)New York Mets
(NYM)

49-60-Did you know David Aardsma was back in the majors, and pitching well?

24 (24)San Francisco Giants
(SFO)

49-61-The Giants didn't sell, leaving these final two months as Tim Lincecum's potential swan song.

25 (23)Philadelphia Phillies
(PHI)

50-61-The deadline passed without a Cliff Lee trade. Expect the talks to flare up again this winter.

26 (26)Minnesota Twins
(MIN)

48-60-Perhaps Justin Morneau finishes the season in Minnesota after all.

27 (27)Milwaukee Brewers
(MIL)

47-64-The Brewers may move some parts, like Michael Gonzalez, in August.

28 (28)Miami Marlins
(MIA)

43-67-Miami's quiet deadline aside, this a team that could make noise sooner than expected.

29 (29)Chicago White Sox
(CWS)

40-69-Don't sleep on Avisail Garcia; he was arguably the best youngster deal this deadline.

30 (30)Houston Astros
(HOU)

38-74-The Astros had a decent deadline, netting a few potentially useful young pieces.

Biggest news I discovered this weekend - Netflix finally came out with the first half of Breaking Bad season 5. Now whether to go back and review the the last 3 or 4 episodes of season 4 or to plunge right in.

I'm a bit irritated at Netflix.

They send me an email on Thursday saying that season 5 of Fringe is up, I watch the first two episodes, then I'm looking for it this weekend and it's gone. Then they send me another email saying, basically "our bad, we jumped the gun, season 5 will be up on September 12"

WTF?

no, yankees lost a series to a shitty team

then again, this is a Red Sox message board

according to some

Yankees and Royals with basically identical records on August 5.

Hasn't happened in decades.

I liked Fringe overall, no complaints. Walter was a great character. I did like the earlier seasons better however.

the way episode 8 of season 5 ended for BB...I am so ready for final 8 episodes.

thankfully I am a Jays fan or I'd have to watch baseball in August.
