Not sure I like the new names for the factions. The Rebels are called The Resistance and what's left of the Empire is now called The First Order. I suppose more backstory for how those names came to be in the 30 years (in story) between RotJ and this film would help a lot.

Me neither. That implies the Rebels never established any form of legitimate government. No New Republic? New Jedi Order? Or was there another rise and fall in that short 30 years?

I've seen fan speculation that there was some sort of new Republic formed but it split into these new factions. That sort of makes sense from "The Resistance" standpoint because what would they be resisting considering the Rebels won?

Wow, that would make for a convoluted dynamic. There was some divisiveness in the EU stories about the New Republic (attempted coups, prime minister-type dying in a bombing, etc.) Could be a good explanation for why the Empire's remnants have been able to hang around and maintain some clout
