For weeks the Yankee have made it clear they want to get under the $197 million luxury tax threshold in 2018, which would reset their tax rate -- they are currently taxed at the maximum 50 percent -- and save the club millions. That is still doable even while taking on Stanton's contract. The Yankees had about $32 million in payroll space available before the trade, plus the inclusion of Castro in the trade will offset some of Stanton's salary. It's possible the Marlins will eat some money as well.

Have to think the Yankees projected Harper and Machado, at roughly the same age as Stanton, will be commanding north of $400 million, so this deal wont look all that awful in comparison

That was a big goal for them and I'm sure played a big role in whether or not they did this. The point is that priorities shift sometimes. You don't get a shot at a Stanton every year. Unlike teams of the past they are trying to build this team for 10 years, not 2. I actually think the goal is still to stay under, but it will be more difficult now.

Stanton is a monster but he is a big dude with quite a list of injuries. Interested to see how long his big body holds up. That being said, the yanks are scary now
