So when this series ends Monday, which it will .. do we look back at the playoff run they had and say they were Cinderella Lucky? An actual contender? Or just flat out beaten by an over the cap team? Montreal has been regular season Montreal this round, but I'm pretty sure that's due to Tampa's over the cap team depth and skill..

Yes.

Their performance against Vegas shows it's not a fluke. Maybe a fringe contender, but they didn't back into it. A few pieces and they could be very good. But next year they are back in the division from hell.

At least Tampa may actually have to adhere to the cap next year and lose Johnson, Cirelli and Coleman. Maybe more.

Oh yeah, it's going to be a tough year after a long post season and a short off season. I don't expect a very good season.

I think there was some good play by Montreal skaters but if we're classifying skill as goal-scoring and offensive play, they were lucky as fucking hell. They have a total 48 goals scored so far these playoffs and unless they manage another 9 goals in their remaining game(s) that will be the lowest GF total by a Cup finalist since the 04-05 lockout (Vegas in '18 and the Kings in '12 are second lowest at 57).

All power to their defensive play because they've definitely suppressed shots - Montreal has allowed the 4th fewest shots per game in these playoffs - but the teams that allowed the fewest and the 3rd fewest were Vegas and Toronto. And despite playing against Montreal's defence those teams are still middle-of-the-pack in shots per game among playoff teams.

Which boils things down to the obvious - Carey Price put them over the edge in at least two series (the Jets suck). Hardly the first to make a run off the back of a great goalie but those do tend to look like Cinderella runs over time and I'm not really expecting the Habs to contend next season unless Price can stay at least close to the level of play he attained in the earlier rounds.

/Each of the four teams they've played lost a top 6 centre within their first couple of games so that kinda helped too lol

All I'm saying is, Toronto could have been swept by the Lightning, easy.
