HH started the poll, but I ended up taking over

we should stick to the way it was

I expect this year's poll to be more serious because last year's were probably mainly crazy because members would be acting out with the freedom to do their own poll, now that they've done this for a year they should settle in to a more serious poll

when I start the poll thread over on the main page each week I'm going to ask for serious ballots this year

except for the preseason one because in all reality the preseason polls are just based on opinion anyways

but I will also make a rule that you can't rank FCS schools higher than 20th.

I think you are giving us clowns way too much credit.

Not sure what you expected :yield:

Oh, I don't know... maybe relevant conversation? I know, I know... but I was hoping for atleast one repsonse that was on topic, instead of a continuation of the husker's 50,000 posts thread. Thank god for Boise.

I'm sure things will be more settled

my preseason poll will obviously be opinion based

but I'm going to be rapidly moving teams up and down based on what they do.

I'm going to pretty much not hold any prior opinion.

I don't, if they play like garbage they don't deserve their ranking and should be dropped.

I was just thinking for the preseason polls.

of course, I am one that don't look at polls until October.

I disagree

especially with Auburn this year

they lost everyone from last years team pretty much.

Hey godawgs, I wasn't trying to turn this into a joke.........I was just tryin ta be funny. I really would like to see a poll get started again. Maybe what we could do is take and average every 4 or so Husker fans together. So say 16 Husker fans vote, we would end up with 4 votes......somethin like that maybe.

I hear ya. I don't mean to come across as if I'm pissed, because I'm not.

It's just that for a second, all I got in response were a bunch of random "wooh Nebraskas", so I was just trying to steer the discussion back to the topic.

I guess I'm really trying to get ahead of ourselves, we still have ways to go.

Should we have a sportshoopla Top 25, like we did last year?

I was thinking that if we do, that we should give it a little more structure. Like maybe only one vote per team, for instance the larger boards like Nebraska could have everyone make a Top 25 & then take the average as their teams vote in the official SportsHoopla top 25.

Then again that might be too much effort,LOL.

I don't know, what do you guys think?

I don't think one per team would work too well with the big differences in fanbase sizes here. I suggest a model that voters are not allowed to rank their own team(s). It would, in theory, remove individual bias without restricting the input of individuals in the larger SportsHoopla fanbases like Nebraska.

If you establish a format, you can copy and paste votes into excel, count and multiply weights (1st = 25, 25th = 1), and rank the teams by point total.

Polls are meaningless until week 7 or 8.. but to be totally fair, the only way you could really do it to get a true gauge is to have each board (Team) do their own voting.

After each team board does their own vote, you take the averages and come up with that teams respective numbers and then submit to the Main SportsHoopla Top 25 thread.

Unfortunately you have teams here that may not have any representation at all.

But here is my top 10 just to stir the pot.

{This is just to start the season not where I think they will end up the season}

1. Oklahoma
2. Alabama
3. LSU
4. Wisconsin
5. Boise State
6. Ohio State
7. S.Carolina
8. Fla. State
9. Oregon
10. Nebraska

That doesn't make sense either. Come week two the winner of the FSU/OU game will have the inside track on #1 and their fans won't be able to vote for them? I understand not wanting fans to vote for their team out of homerism but that happens in the AP and Coaches poll, too.

I think it's up to everyone to be more mature this year

last year was the year to get all the "funny" out of our systems

the idea of not counting a ranking for someone's team is not a good idea

because then whoever has the most fans will be lowest

and Alabama would likely be preseason #1 because they're the only top team that doesn't have any fans here.

averaging out votes for a certain fanbase wouldn't work either because then there would be less voters which would cause one voter's crazy ballot to ruin the whole poll

the more voters we have the more balanced it will be

If FSU or OU deserve to be number one, then they will be voted so by fans of other teams. It sounds to me that GoDAWGS is looking to change it up and remove bias. That's exactly what not being able to vote for your own team would do. That is ofcourse unless you think posters would intentionally underrate other teams more than overrate their own, in which case the idea of a SportsHoopla 25 is a already a lost cause.

Either I failed to properly explain it or you are missing the point of the your own team out deal. Like I said, get the right format, pop it into excel, give weight to votes, tally points, then average for eligible voters.

Say there are 50 total voters and 5 Virginia Tech voters. Virginia Tech's votes are tallied and weighted 1 to 25. Divide by 45 eligible voters (the 45 non- VT fans). Rank this final result. Its a normalized scale of sorts.

Now when it gets down to it in to a real close call, say two undefeated teams where the non-fans are split on who is better, yes, this method is advantageous to the smaller fan bases. However, it does mitigate silly homerism, which was the biggest controllable issue raised.

Maybe this idea is overboard and unnecessary. When its all said and done, there is no solution besides posters giving serious votes.
