You have in essence made the primary factor in who should be #1 the actions of athletic directors and conference schedulers, not the quality of play of the players. How on Earth does that make any sense?
The question shouldn't be who has "looked good" against the "better" teams. The question is who is the best team that has shown the most on the field.
I'm not saying that a 24-10 win over the #85 team is better than a 21-20 win over the #2 team. I agree that you have to take Alabama's competition into account. It's just that when I do that, and when I look at the talent of their players and coaches and what they have proven this year on the field, I see them as being better than LSU. Considering Alabama will likely be a 7-10 point favorite over LSU, it appears that I am hardly alone.
The primary factor of who should be number one is who you beat and how you beat them. Bama and Clemson have demolished the competition because their competition has been shit. LSU has demolished their competition aside from this past weekend and that includes dropping 42 on a top 10 team. Ohio State has demolished their competition and that included allowing a combined 7 points against the 2 top 20 teams they've faced. LSU and Ohio State should be 1, 2 solely based on their play against the upper echelon teams that they have faced.
If the question you are judging the rankings on is who is the best team that has shown the most on the field, how is Bama better than Ohio State? Examples:
OSU has not allowed more than 21 points in a single game, which was the first game of the season and since then, they haven't allowed more than 10 points per game. In comparison, Alabama has allowed more than 21 points per game 3 times this season and that is against SHITTIER competition than Ohio State.
Ohio State has Bama beat in total offense, both teams are averaging 48 PPG and have similar turnover margins, Ohio State is better at converting on 3rd down thus far and, probably the most important stat, Ohio State has a much better defense, allowing 80 less yards per game than Alabama. Reminder, Ohio State has played against better teams than Alabama has thus far. Sorry but I can't agree with the notion that Alabama is a better team than either Ohio State OR LSU, but ESPECIALLY Ohio State right now.
