I wouldnt pay him 9 mill per and would be reluctant to pay him 8 mill per but 7 mill and under is very reasonable at todays going rate. Guards are no longer undervalued.
Very good guards command that kind of money. But Long? No thanks!

Long got a $27.5M contract with NO signing bonus.

In effect, its a one year contract with $6M guaranteed, and three years of team options.

If the Jets decide to cut him next year, they would have ZERO cap liability for him.

In effect its a pay as you go contract withe the only real guaranteed money being this year.

And while I believe this is a good contract for the Jets, I still think they over paid. Long is a borderline starter/backup player who can fill in at both C/G. Nice piece to have but not nice enough to improve our LG situation at the moment. Perhaps if he would have come in under $5M we would have considered but he was obviously asking for the moon. In any case, we will likely find a better fit for less money after June 1.

That has been a large part of the problem with the Bruce Allen train of thought. We can find better for less after June 1st. Most of the guys we have signed after June 1st, while cheaper also have not really worked out for this team. The majority of the players we signed in FA last year, were borderline aside from Brown and maybe Swearinger. Some times, you are better off paying a little more to keep what you have an move forward, rather than trying to save a few dollars and starting over.

Can't say I don't disagree with this but, again, Long obviously did not offer enough to warrant starter money.

For the right price he is which is why Rollier is now the starter.

Regardless of cost, Skins lost a very important player in Long that they need to replace. He was on his way to being one of the top centers in the NFL, and he could also help at guard - depending on need. He is a major loss for the Skins.
