Do i need a smart tv or Apple TV to watch on my TV? This would be for next year since I'm locked in this year. I'm still a sucker for flipping on the Game Mix and leaving it on all day..

Yeah, you need some kind of device. I've got Apple TVs. I think roku, play station and some other deals work too. I travel a reasonable amount, so the big things for me are the phone and tablet.
