Excellent point. Example:

Joe Namath--50.1%, 27,663 yards, 173 TD-220 INT, 65.5 passer rating--Hall-of-Fame

Eli Manning--60.3%, 57,023 yards, 366 TD-244 INT, 84.5 passer rating--Hall-of-Fame? FOR THE LOVE OF GOD NO!!! HE SUCKED!!!
:D

Back in the 1970s, Cornerbacks could mug receivers down the field. There was no five yard rule. The way the game was played then Receivers were not going to catch as many passes and you can't compare stats from the 1970s and earlier to the 1980s through today. Stats today are inflated. Joe Montana would have been a good QB in any era but would not have put up the numbers he did had he played in the 1970s

the Mel Blount rule. Where you beat up the WR & send him back to the huddle. LOL

Blount would have been drafted if he didn't go Mike Tyson.
