I know we are all disappointed in our offense and hope we can turn it around. With 31 games left it's closer to a plea than a hope. I decided to look at some stats that I always felt explained what was happening to us this year. Almost sorry I did. Sort of makes me think there is no real answers and it is what it is. At the moment we are 69-62. I dicided to look at that centered around 3 runs. This is what I found

69 wins - In 24 of these we only scored 3 or less runs. That's 34.7% of our wins

62 Losses - In 19 of these losses we held the opposition to 3 runs or less. That's 30.6% of our losses.

131 Games - To this point in the schedule we have been held to 3 runs or less 78 times. That's a wopping 59.5% of our total games.

In general our pitching has been really good. We just don't have much to back it up.

Not to belabor the obvious, but indeed our pitching has been very good and our injury-depleted and regression-riddled offense has been historically awful.

When the season was ongoing, there was always enough time for Huff and Ross and Torres to get it going, for our acquisitions to make an impact, etc. That time is running out. When the story of this season ends, it may be quite obvious how it was all going to play out.

Couldn't say that in June, July, there was still time for things to work

The fat lady is warming up...we either go on a tear the remainder of this homestand or it's hard to see a path to winning the division. If another team had our issues we'd have written them off long ago.

yep - agree with what you said. Just realizing that in 1/3 of our wins we were held to 3 runs or less shows you how strong our pitching is. Couple that with the 19 losses that we suffered when we only gave up 3 or less runs and you see the strength of our pitching. The part that is telling for me is the 'win' column. In those 24 wins where we only score 3 or less runs highlights the narrow (to nonexistant) room our pitchers have for making a mistake. One or two bad pitches and it could easily shift to the loss column. I also agree that we need to go on a tear for the remainder of this homestand. We can't addord to meet the DBacks being 4-5 behind. That would almost force us to sweep. Possible but not probable.

Nice postgame writeup by baggs.

Here's a snippet:

If the Giants miss the playoffs, nobody in their right mind will blame the manager. Injuries have crushed the Giants this season. The moment Buster Posey went down May 25, they had a valid excuse. Losing Freddy Sanchez really, really hurt, too.

But in a way, the Giants’ underperforming veterans have been more damaging. At least Posey hasn’t made an out since May. Huff has made so very many while chasing terrible pitches. So has Rowand, Ross and Andres Torres.

Every one of those outs dimmed the bulb by the slightest bit. The Giants are wandering in total darkness now.

Good post & excerpt.

Apparently Krukow was ripping Huff and Ross this AM on the radio, and those two are themselves starting to pantshat a little when they talk to reporters.

Ms. Beltran may have killed the chemistry...

How the hell can ANY of those guys complain about losing playing time? Rowand? That piece of shit should feel lucky he even has a uniform. Ross? That guy can't hit water right now if he fell out of a boat. Huff? Well, that guy at least acknowledges that he sucks right now.

This team needs an intervention.

Maybe so, but I would submit - what chemistry? To state the obvious, this year is not last year.

Sometimes the best chemistry when things are going bad is to focus on your own performance, and be professional. One's credibility as a clubhouse leader suffers when one is hitting .240. No one wants to hear about your ideas for gimmicks to raise the esprit de corps when you are playing like crap.

We are certainly not out of this yet. But now is not the time to point fingers, or look for someone else to lead, or wait for some magic object to suddenly work a miracle. If you want to win, then make plays. Do your job which you are very well-compensated to do, and do it well. And do it now.

According to Carl Steward on Twitter,

Ramon Hernandez has been pulled back from waivers. Not coming to SF. :(

Rowand has not had a walk in his last 103 plate appearances, with 23 K's. Last walk was July 5, or almost 8 weeks ago! And he is complaining about playing time? :L

As others have pointed out, we were scrapping and winning somehow before Ms. Thang showed up, now if we are down 2 runs we feel like the game is over.

Maybe if we cut the ballplayers' taxes they'd hit better.

Rowand read this post and tried to respond. But he swung his mouse toward the Submit Reply button and missed.

Yeah, but the pitchers on other teams would pitch better, and it would be a wash.

Maybe we could just have the state let all players on California teams skip paying on their state income tax?

Better - raise the state income tax on all the other players. Certainly that would go a long way to reducing deficits everywhere.
