They probably saw the kind of stuff he has and figured they could be the ones to finally get through to him somehow. It doesn't surprise me that a new coaching staff sees a guy with a lot of physical talent and limited success and thinks that they can be the ones to "fix" him and get him living up to that potential. I imagine it's the same reason why Wilhelmsen is still on the roster, only in Wilhelmsen's case there was a fair amount of success for him at the major league level before the wheels fell off.

My hope is that the M's won't have to rely on either one of them in too many tight situations while we wait for Iwakuma, Walker and Pryor to come back and the shuffling that will take place once they do. These two guys should only be used in blowout situations or in desperate extra inning situations where they're literally the last guys available.

don't feel bad. Oakland Jim Johnson... 2 appearances 2 blown saves with an ERA of 45.00 and at the bargain price of $6.5 million. Guess it can only get better.

But at least Johnson has actually been not terrible once in his career

Jim Johnson from 2011-2013:
2.70 ERA 6.6 WAR 110 saves in 230 IP

Hector Noesi from 2011-2013:
5.52 ERA -1.0 WAR 0 saves in 190.1 IP

Want to trade? Since 2008 Jim Johnson has been a real quality bullpen arm and from 2012-2013 a top closer. I'd be shocked if Jim Johnson does not rebound and have a solid ERA by the end of the season. Hector Noesi has been garbage forever and will continue being garbage.

So... This happened

Mariners Designate Hector Noesi For Assignment

By Charlie Wilmoth [April 4 at 4:29pm CST]
The Mariners announce that they have designated pitcher Hector Noesi for assignment. The move clears space to add reliever Dominic Leone to the 25-man roster. The Mariners used six pitchers, including Noesi, to get through six innings of relief in a 12-inning game yesterday. (Noesi took the loss, giving up a walk-off home run to Coco Crisp.) Leone provides the Mariners with an extra arm in their bullpen.
Noesi, 27, has a 5.64 career ERA with 6.4 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 191 1/3 innings, some of them as a starter. He pitched just 27 1/3 innings with the Mariners in 2013, spending much of the season in the minors. The Mariners acquired him from the Yankees in the Jesus Montero / Michael Pineda trade in early 2012.

^ Ah, this is what we had been missing these last few years: The immediate response!

Best news we could have all day, even with a win tonight!

He wasn't going to be here much longer anyway with Kuma and Walker coming back soon and pushing Young and/or Elias into the pen. I like that McClendon had a short leash on Noesi, but I would have preferred it if he'd gotten knocked around a bit while the M's had a comfortable lead and been let go before he even had a chance to lose a close game.

I think Lloyd had the same plan, but the ump decided to change that plan.
