If Rak is able to get his franchise tag to count under the DE position like Suggs was last year, how many will still think it was smarter to tag him than to sign him long term?? And how many will simply hope the Skins deal him to another team at that point??

I ask this because many freaked out at possibly paying him 411 million a season, which in fact we have just done. Now he might get it bumped up to $13 million for next year. Even i can admit thats rather steep for his services. But in the end would we have been smarter just to sign him long term and have a cap figure of say $6 million this year instead of $11.5-13 million?

Of course we would. Don't you think the FO is aware of this and tried?

My honest opinion, this front office is willing to cut off its nose to spite its face in this one. They have a hard number they are willing to pay Orakpo. They didnt want to use the tag, but felt they could throw it out there to try and force him to play for less than market value to get a long term deal in place. I think Allen is trying too hard to prove he knows what he is doing and risks hurting the team in an attempt to prove that we will not be over paying players. No the real question comes in a little over a week. Because if we make a bunch of roster moves to bring in guys like Byrd and Talib all while doing every thing possible to not pay our own guys.... Im going to seriously be concerned.

Just out of curiosity, what data are you using to form your opinion? How do you know that the team didn't make a very good offer and Rak refused? Shark, I value your opinion and input, I find it very insightful. But this time you are so upset over this RAK/Riley issue that you are not being objective. This is a huge leap that you have made without any supporting facts that I have seen. I think it best to wait and see what really has happened and what will still happen. Tho very rare, they could hammer out a long deal, both parties claim to want it.

2 Good things can come out of this he either signs a long term deal or another team comes calling and gives up 2 1st round picks

no team is ponying up 2 1st rounders for rak .

what would happen is a trade

but stop all the silliness , look at it as davis part 2 , show you can stay healthy before we go long term and lets address it in 2014 when we have more cap space

then you create another hole in the defense and you spin wheels . now perhaps a dee ford fixes it but at the expense of a safety or ILb or RT or WR or CB

Exactly. The team was over a barrel. ROLB is so critical to this defense and RAK is a good one. We had no way to replicate his production. We might have been able to cobble an OK bandaid with Jackson and Jenkins, but that is a crap shoot. We really didn't have a choice. That is why I believe that the team tried everything within reason to sign him to a long term deal. But it takes 2 to tango. You can't get healthy of defense by losing your best player at a very critical position. My guess is they will focus this year on developing a potential replacement should they let him walk next year. Which means we will probably be drafting a OLB this year.
