The Test: Will the Jaguars? defense give Redskins problems like the Texans did?

Excerpt

But that doesn’t mean it is going to be an easy day for Washington — the Jaguars make up for a lack of star power with depth. For example, Ryan Davis, Andre Branch and Chris Clemons got to the quarterback at least twice against Philadelphia with Davis and Branch recording two sacks each. Linebacker Geno Hayes allowed just 19 yards after the catch in coverage. And cornerback Alan Ball was targeted 10 times in coverage but allowed just four receptions for 37 yards and had an interception.
The key for Washington will be to grind the Jaguars’ defensive line down via the running game and have RGIII get rid of the ball quickly. In the second half the Eagles ran the ball almost half the time (48.8 percent) against Jacksonville and generated more than double the amount of yards per play.

I think without the turnovers and blunders on ST, we would have scored 21 pts. RGIII's performance was solid.

He had two fumbles in the game. If you have two fumbles and your QBR is in the 20s...it wasn't a solid game.

He had a 29.7 QBR...his QB rating was 96.7.

There is a difference.

Excerpt

4. The Jaguars are banged up on both sides of the football and do not have sufficient depth to overcome the probable loss of wide receiver Cecil Shorts and safety Jonathan Cyprien. I feel really good about that if i am the Redskins.

The Jaguars running back Toby Gerhart is also not 100% and that should help keep him under control.

However, the Redskins will still be challenged along the defensive line with Barry Cofield out until mid-November and Kedric Golston listed as doubtful for Sunday.

Why is that important? Depth and the defensive line rotation is in the line of fire. Last week, the Redskins had six linemen activated with only Frank Kearse down. Now, the Redskins only have six on the roster and if Golston is down (very likely) they will only have five DL active.

Besides a numbers issue, Washington does not have a true backup nose tackle. Chris Baker was the starting left defensive end and now will replace Cofield at his natural position. Jarvis Jenkins and Jason Hatcher will flank him. However, what happens when Baker needs to be spelled? Certainly, he will be limited in nickel situations to keep his snap count down and body fresh, but the Redskins do not have a true backup at the position because Golston was the only guy who had some level of ability to play it. Jenkins played a snap or two last week, but Jim Haslett is praying that nothing happens to Baker.

6. Will Santana Moss be active? Probably not. Perhaps a better question is - will he even be on the roster as of Saturday at 4 PM?

It sounds crazy, but if the Redskins have to bring back Zach Hocker to replace Forbath and they don't want to cut Forbath, they would have to create a roster spot. Who are you cutting?

The numbers game because of injury is pretty hard to overcome if you are Moss. I'm not saying it will happen, but I wouldn't be surprised at all.

An interesting speculation on who would be cut if they bring Hocker back.

Excerpt

It took Clemons a few years to prove his worth, but he was traded to the Seattle Seahawks for a fourth round pick in 2010. With Seattle, injuries forced the Seahawks to use Clemons more than they originally intended to, and Clemons seized the opportunity and never looked back. Clemons led the team with 11 sacks in 2011-2012.

Clemons tore his ACL in his first trip back to Washington with Seattle (yes the playoff game RG III tore his as well) before coming back the next season to help the Seahawks win the super bowl. The year after the super bowl, Clemons was cut and signed with his former defensive coordinator and now head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars Gus Bradley.

There is irony here...

I was listening to Cooley yesterday. He doubts we will see RO in this game against the Jags. :L

I hope he is wrong. He feels it should be utilized. So do I.

Excerpt

The Redskins will need to establish their running game quickly and efficiently in this tough matchup, and personally I believe they have the offensive line to do it. Yes, the line takes some heavy bashing for their pass protection, and rightly so, but they are one of the better run blocking groups in the league.

Take note of the Jaguars line and their positioning during the game to see how they take away the outside zone and force the run down the middle.

Either way this will be a key battle in the game as the Redskins attempt to draw more Jags defenders into the box and open up the passing game for it's talented receivers.
