with a runner on in the 9th?

This isn't a thread to count down the best hitters who've played since you started watching baseball, that's been done. I'm wondering, since you've started watching, who's one guy who has come to the plate in the past and hurt your team late, and who you never wanted to see again in the same situation?

Because of the nature of the question, it will almost always be a guy who played a significant part of his career in your team's division, or at least league. For example, Mike Trout has been the best hitter in baseball since 2012, but I wouldn't even consider picking him, since he's probably played ~6 games against the Phillies (though he did hit a homer against us I think this past year- bastard).

So, to conclude, the parameters are
  • Ability to perform in the "clutch" (the dreaded c-word!)
  • Has hurt your team a lot before
  • His team plays a lot against your team

For me, off the top of the head, I have Chipper Jones, Carlos Delgado, and Bryce Harper. Personally, I won't include Harper for now, because when he has killed the Phillies, we've sucked and it hasn't really mattered. If he can face us when we're good (and especially if the Nats are good), he would definitely be right up there on my list, probably first.

Between Jones and Delgado, it's close, but I'm taking Delgado. I don't remember his exact numbers, but it seems he hit a home run off us every series he played against us from 2006-2008. Chipper Jones was also a classic Phillie killer, but he was more consistent every game against us, rather than hitting a ton of walk-off home runs (though I do remember two walk-off's against us back in 2012 in epic Phillies' collapses:L)

In 326 AB against Philly (I can't find PA), Delgado hit .310/.404/.613 with 21 home runs.

Delgado. Fuck. You.

Carlos Beltran, David Wright, and Hanley Ramirez were all great players when they were in their primes in the NL East. Weirdly enough, when I think of them coming up in the 9th, none of them really scare me at all. Wright would scare me the most, but even him not a ton. Then, Hanley. Carlos Beltran is the king of choking, a la knees-buckling-strike-three-straring-season-ending-curveball-watching choking.

At least that's how I remember it. He was still an awesome player.

So easy for me as a Yankee fan

In my lifetime

#1 - David Ortiz
#2 - Edgar Martinez

These guys stepping to the plate in a huge spot, I almost would just count on the loss

A distant 3rd, Jay Buhner was also a huge Yankee killer, he probably never got over being traded for Ken Phelps

Buhner's son is currently in the Phillies' system. In 56 PA last year in the Gulf Coast League, Gunnar Buhner hit .122/.232/.163

Yeah, I hung out with him one time when I was down in Jacksonville. He kept talking about giving up baseball. He was also really curious about how life insurance policies work- specifically his father's.

McCann is a good one. He would always do the small things to beat you- going 2-for-4 or 3-for-4 against you in every game in a 4 game series, having a game-tying double to send the game into extras.

Cano's stats against the Sox aren't as good as I thought they'd be (still quite good at .301/.344/.495), but he loves Fenway (.335/.376/.559). Mike Napoli has a career line of .253/.344/.629 and 19 home runs in 48 games against the Sox. On the bright side, he was somewhat of a Yankee killer with the Sox.

Frank Thomas. Wasn't in the Red Sox' division thank God, but he owned them...43 HR and 1.021 OPS in 163 games.

During the 03-04 battles with the Yanks, Hideki Matsui was the guy I least wanted to see up there.

.279/.348/.435. Another guy I thought hit better against them than he did.

A-Rod hit .283/.376/.513 in his lifetime against the Sox. He loved facing the Royals though (.329/.432/.644 in 710 PA against them).
