Detroit Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith has been suspended for the remainder of the preseason and five regular season games by the NHL for his shoulder check to the head of Chicago Blackhawks forward Ben Smith in Wednesday's preseason game at the United Center.
The Red Wings assigned Smith today to the Grand Rapids Griffins. His suspension does not carry over to the AHL, so he is eligible to play for the Griffins right away.
But whenever the Red Wings recall Smith, he must sit out five NHL games.
I was originally going to create a new thread about this, but decided it wasn't that big a topic.
Is anyone else getting tired of reading more about suspensions than the actual game? It seems like the talk about head-shots, trash-talk, and 'updated' rules are getting more publicity than the actual season ahead of us.
i am
also getting tired of the network panels debating (ie during intermission whether this hit or that hit which we just saw last period will or will not be reviewed)
this was one of the fears about a rules crackdown regarding PR spin ... that every day would be negative news about players being suspended
Media/fans are just bored with not much to talk about, IMO...
Once the regular season starts, hopefully it won't be as big news as it is now and it'll die down a bit.
5?
So was the video basically "It was a vicious, blindsided hit against a defenseless player. But c'mon his name is BRENDAN and he's a Red Wing. Sooooo"
Pretty clear what kind of mandate Shanahan received from the powers that be...
Players suspended: 8
Salary forfeited: $684,114.99
Preseason game suspensions: 28
Regular season game suspensions: 29
Total game suspensions: 57
He's not fucking around.
The Shanabans!

You were gonna post this no matter how many games it was.
Probably.
How'd you feel about the two for MacArthur on Abdelkader?
Don't know really. I probably would have been fine with nothing. (other than the in game penalty) Abbey looked like he would of rather got his hands on him rather than have Shanny do it.

Hearing no disciplinary action for VAN's Alex Edler or Marco Sturm. Apparently no evidence of "targeting" on either hit.
On the Edler one, I agree, he did take a look back, but that was probably just to see how much time he had going back for the puck. As for Sturm, he knew what he was doing and was looking all the way until contact was made.
