I'd guess season-ending surgery, though retirement wouldn't be that shocking to me.

Either of these 2 scenarios. It has to be one or the other.

Seems like everyone is expecting a retirement announcement. I don't see why a major news conference is needed to announce you're going to be out for several months or the rest of the season. That is just a press release.

I was not the biggest fan of her but seeing someone retire at the young age of 28 would be disappointing. I typically expect tennis players to retire between the ages of 32 and 34.

Major announcement tomorrow night. Speculation is that she retiring

I am not sure whether she is competing with Manning for retirement, but at least would they not give a hint? He re is what is known so far:
"I am extremely disappointed that I am unable to compete in this year's BNP Paribas Open," Sharapova said in a statement to Indian Wells. "I have been focused on healing my left forearm injury and tried to get my body to be 100 percent ready to play this event, as it is one of my favorite events on the WTA and so close to my home in L.A. I know the tournament will be a great success this year, and I will be anxious to return next year and hopefully many years after."

Sharapova is a two-time champion in the desert of Indian Wells. She last won in 2013, sweeping all 12 of her sets en route to the title."
Sharapova is still scheduled to play the Miami Open, which begins March 23." Read more from Sharapova won't play Indian Wells due to injury

We shall see.

If she does retire, that'll be a big loss in the "50 year old horny guys with ugly/fat wives" demographic.

The women's circuit will never be the same. It's thing to see Navratilova and Billy Jean King to retire, but to see this retire...

Damn. That's to bad. One less hot chick in the sport of tennis. There is always the Williams sisters, although they resemble linebackers in the NFL.

yeah, how someone can stay skinny and be busted for drugs but someone that looks like James Harrison in a skirt passes roid tests.

Meh. The drug was legal up until a few months ago.

I like the part about not being approved by the FDA. Pretty much like half the drugs in the world that can actually cure something. Big Pharma does not allow drugs in the US that cure. Just ones they can keep people strung out on for life so they can make a buck.

This is sad for a couple of reasons.

I do believe that Sharapova has been taking it for a lot of years, and I do believe this was an accident that was the result of not knowing it was banned.

However, the athletes are told over and over and over again to check and make sure that anything they put in their bodies is not on the banned list.
- If it's a prescribed medication, there's a form they can fill out and everything to get cleared to take it.
- There's an 800 number they all can call 24 hours/day to find out if what they're taking is or is not banned.
-They are well aware that substances get added to the banned list constantly

There are no excuses for this, especially from somebody who is a multi-millionaire with a team of handlers she pays big money for to take care of these things. I guarantee somebody on her team is going to get fired for this.

Most beta blockers are on the big banned lists, so they really needed to be on the lookout for this one.

Lance Armstrong she is not.

There are no excuses for any rational adult to make here. Glad Sharapova isn't trying.

The testing agencies and ITF bend over backwards to make sure that all athletes understand the importance of keeping up to date with the ever-changing PED list. The onus is on them, and it's really not that much to ask of them.

I feel bad for Sharapova, and I don't think it was intentional on her part, but that's moot in any conversation about whether she should get punished for this like any other athlete.
