So that's what a premier defense looks like. They have the best interior linebackers in the league. Both Willis and Bowman just fly to the ball. Also, their front line were just possessed. They aren't big and the have a couple of guys that are long in the tooth, but they completely controlled the line of scrimmage. Top it of with a coach that knows how to use them, and they are a force.
We can only dream of having a defense like that. It all starts with controlling the middle of the field. Cofield is a hell of a football player, but he is not a natural nose tackle. He does a good job, but will never be a premier NT. Fletcher, who actually played OK last night, still is a step slow and just can't get to the ball carrier anymore. Riley is a good player and should be kept but like coefield, will never be elite. We need to shore up that middle with a top guy to replace London. Overall, our front 4-5 just can't get enough pressure on their own. Even when we blitz, we rarely get to the QB. That has to be a scheme thing.
Rak also had a good game. He seems to be turning it up a notch in the last few games. Kerrigan play OK, but we have him in coverage way, way too much.
Our secondary..........wow. Wilson was flat out abused last night. By every receiver they sent out. Sometimes he wasn't within 5 yards of the receiver when the catch was made. It was telling when they decided to pick on Wilson and not Amerson. Hall played like he has all season......very good. Of course, no one rarely challenges him anymore, when you have wilson on the other side. Doughty played well against the run, we used him as a 3rd ILB most of the game. But he is a liability in coverage. We have to get another safety so that he can go back to focus on STs.
Our defense needs a complete redo, maybe even a scheme change. the 3-4 has never worked with this team in 4 years. How bad can it get if we go back to the 4-3?
