I live in St. Louis, and I think Seattle has a major homeless problem. That should tell you something. It's a beautiful Metro area, but it's hard to consider it a great, walkable city when you are outnumbered by homeless people anywhere Downtown after dark. Crime rates are deceiving because they tend to target people that choose to live a certain lifestyle. FWIW, i'd feel much safer in Chicago than I would in Seattle. Seattle is a very nice city, but it's not the nirvana (pun somewhat intended) that people think it is.

Well, I think the key word you used is feel. Seattle's crime statistics are a pretty hard number to massage, although I am sure some numbers are fudged a little, but Chicago is a downright shithole.

I lived in LA during the 80's, I know what a crime infested shithole looks like, it isn't Seattle.

(Besides, most smart people live outside of downtown, and don't really wander around down there much after dark.)

Spray tans? Those don't even exist here. Just live here for a couple days and you'll get a tan.

LOL at you saying that, but your profile says you reside in scottsdale. Spray tanned, affliction shirt center of the universe.

The defense mechanism about "total inches of rain" is misleading.

It might not rain downpours in the NW, but for about 9 months its gray and drizzly.
It is depressing gray skies 6 out of 7 days or more that always seems to threaten rain and drizzle.

Whereas a place like Florida might have a sudden freakish midday summer 2 inches downpour.
Then it is Sunny and bright for the rest of the day after like 15 minutes of crazy rain.

So, you end up technically with Florida having far more total inches of rain.
And it enables Seattle area boosters to focus on that useless statistic.

But no doubt the 3 months of summertime dry weather is sublime and probably the most perfect climate in the USA. Nobody does summer better than Washington.

It is just the reward for the other misery laden gray 9 months......

"A Washington state lawmaker said Sunday he was just engaging in some sports trash talk when he called the state of Arizona a “racist wasteland.”
Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon, D-Burien, made his harsh comment on Twitter after the Seattle Seahawks lost to the Arizona Cardinals. Fitzgibbon later deleted his message and said in an interview that people were taking his trash talk a little too seriously.
“If folks are going to take that too seriously, then I’m sorry about that,” Fitzgibbon said."

:L

I actually agree with him there: if something comes out of Burien, you probably shouldn't take it too seriously. I think there's a reason that Almost Live made fun of Burien as much as they did.

people do take things far to seriously these days and our news is nothing more than 14 year old girl gossip and talk about what someone else did or said on fucking twitter or facebook. Our country is a bunch of Kardashians

Did anyone consider the high suicide rates a result of the high octogenarian population. I would call Dr. Kevorkian as well if my bowels and dick no longer worked!

I lived in the Seattle area for a couple of years. I went fishing in the rain, played frisbee in the rain, went to the park in the rain, I loved swimming in the rivers in the rain.

You get used to it or you hide indoors and get depressed. I enjoyed the hell out of my time there.

I almost ended up in Arizona but took this position here in Okinawa instead. I was thrilled with the idea of riding in the dunes and such.....

This is essentially what I see when one political side says the other political side is "racist."

I live in Chicago now. NO WAY it's safer than Seattle.

I lived in Phoenix (well, Peoria) for 8 years.

I'm going to get back to Seattle as soon as I can convince the wife. Best of the 3 by far in my opinion (someone who's lived in all three places for over 7 years each).

Depends where they're from. West side of the state (Seattle, Tacoma, Everett etc) are very liberal on the whole (that's not to say that conservatives don't live there of course) but once you get east of the cascades the state is very red.

I lived in Seattle for 2.5 years while I was getting my degree at UW and loved every single minute of it. I'll probably end up back there eventually.

Of course it's not some "nirvana". Seattle, like every other major city has it's fair share of problems. But, no, you are not outnumbered by homeless people after dark downtown and even if that were true, it doesn't represent the danger most people think it does. A lot of homeless people shy away from confrontation and are harmless, (just like the rest of the population). It's a stereotype that they are all criminals and far from the truth.
As for Chicago being safer, I highly doubt that. Not that I have any notion of testing the theory out.

I thought that was Renton, but yes Burien can definitely give John Keister some good material.

Yeah, they made fun of Renton more than Burien, but I think Almost Live sometimes mentioned Burien in the same vein as Kent, Renton, etc.
