Even then there were other guys in the 70s or 80s or something, one of them being Lou Holtz. I didn't look up who the other one was but they were definitely not only NFL history, but even Superbowl era.


I knew about Petrino because his name came up a lot when Meyer was getting fired. Petrino quit before he got canned though. I had forgotten about Holtz in 76 and had no idea who Pete McCully was. Had to look him up. He was WR coach and not even a co-ordinator. San Fran was pretty abyssmal in the 70s though so no surprise. Petrino, Meyer and Holtz all successful college coaches who were in over their head as NFL HCs.
