Mac's Football Blog: Seahawks Sign K Jeff Reed
The Seattle Seahawks have signed free agent kicker Jeff Reed, a league source confirmed on Wednesday.
Financial terms of the one-year deal were not disclosed.
During his nine-year career with the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers, the former undrafted free agent out of North Carolina is 213-of-259 on field goal attempts.
Reed was franchised by the Steelers in 2010, but was released after missing seven of 22 attempts to start the season. Signed by the 49ers a few weeks later to replace an injured Joe Nedney, Reed went 9-of-10 on field goal tries over the final five games.
Nedney was released by the 49ers, who signed veteran David Akers to a three-year contract.
The Seahawks lost veteran Olindo Mare to free agency, with Mare signing a four-year, $12 million contract with the Carolina Panthers. The Seahawks brought in the 32-year-old Reed for a tryout on Tuesday, and provided the CBA is ratified today, Reed and 2008 seventh-round pick Brandon Coutu, who was re-signed last week, will both be eligible to practice on Thursday.
Undrafted rookie kicker Wes Byrum is expected to be placed on waivers.
