Scot McCloughan on Kirk Cousins: Let me overpay him if he’s good

Scot talked up Cuz in an interview with Bleacher Report's Jason Cole. On the face of things, he doesn't sound too sold on Cuz yet, and a long term deal doesn't sound like it's in the offing. If one is to be struck, it'll have to be done by July 15, and that simply won't be enough time for Scot to see more of Kirk. So, based on what Scot's saying now, and if the relative positions of the parties don't change, an extension doesn't look too likely. Deadlines, of course, have a way of bringing two sides a lot closer as they approach. We'll have to stay tuned to see whether that happens here.

Of course, Scot can't take a public position by lavishing adulation on Cousins since that would compromise his negotiating stance with him. But we can only go by what Scot is saying now. While he's not saying anything bad about Cuz, he's also taking a wait-and-see approach.

The whole article gives a broader context to this. I posted it in the Scot thread.

My take is that Scot views Kirk as a 'red' piece player that might develop into a 'blue' player. But with the right surrounding 'football minded' players, The team will benefit and can succeed, regardless.

I think SM's final offer to KC was 16m. If has the season like he did last year then he might get 20M per season on a long term deal. I can see why KC is going to bet on himself. I believe with the drafting of Kelly and a healthy Jackson for 16 games his numbers should only get better.

If Scot has this view on Kirk, I can't imagine what his opinion of RGIII would be.

Redskins mailbag: Could they trade up? Does Scot McCloughan trust Kirk Cousins?

Scot's seeming reticence on Cousins shouldn't be construed as a lack of trust for Cuz. As Mike Jones explains, it's really a question of caponomics and not one where Scot thinks Cuz is a bust risk. While he wants to see more from Cuz, the skepticism many think he's expressing is really a nuanced view of Cuz's prospects that's broken down in terms of gradations of "good." When he finds what shade that may be, a corresponding contract will come. Or, if both sides can reach common ground on a number, Cuz will get his extension. And Jones also points out that, as we sometimes forget, Scot did want to ink Cuz to a long-term deal. So, to any who think Scot is not "sold" on Cuz, you're in for a bit of a disappointment.

McCloughan feels good about Cousins as well. He wanted to sign Cousins to a multi-year deal, but didn’t want to financially hamstring the team at the same time. Cousins and his agent felt good about taking the one-year franchise player deal and setting themselves up for a bigger pay day next offseason instead of locking themselves in to a more-modest deal.

I think right now, McCloughan sees Cousins as a good quarterback, but also believes that Cousins’s best chance for success is to be surrounded by more talent, both on offense and defense. Now, it’s up to Cousins to show the general manager that he actually can be elite and deserves the big pay day. Similarly, McCloughan likes the direction that Gruden has the team going, but he also knows he has to give the coach more talent to work with. So, McCloughan is in the process of doing that, and it’s on Gruden to prove that he can continue to develop this roster while also remaining competitive at the same time.

So in other words hes approaching all of this the same way I would. Interesting.
