Chipper Jones just went on the DL and will likely miss the All Star game, which leaves just Aramis Ramirez on the roster. Now, go around the league and think of a single one deserving. With Bochy the manager I think he'll likely pick him, making up for 2009.

EDIT: My bad, I had that Polanco had already been replaced by Aramis Ramirez. Apparently not. Therefore his chances are still slim, unless Polanco is injured.

Your first slash number was from last year.....had to b-ref look it up.....

Rolen's BA so far this year is .245.....no way should he be an all star with those numbers....

LOL Yeah, that's why I had to look it up....

I agree, Sandoval (maybe gets snubed because of lost playing time due to injury) or Ramirez.....He gets overlooked because almost all of his first half homers have come in the past 2-3 weeks even though his BA was solid the entire first half.

Headley and Roberts are lesser known players and even though they may have put forth good enough numbers to be considered, I can understand why they aren't.

But we are again talking about a game that is mostly a popularity contest, whether it be by us ignorant fans (and I do mean that sincerely) or the players' peers being voted in......or managers just selecting the guys they want in the end, and hopefully Sandoval can get that nod since it's Bochy at the helm for the senior circuit this year.

The dude is simply a sacrificing MACHINE...

A sac counts AGAINST your OBP, doesn't it?

Had to look that up, and you're right.....a sac FLY does indeed negatively effect the OBP while not touching the BA.....

Baseball stats and all their quirks can be funny at times......we're only starting to see mainstream folks pay attention to OBP to begin with. As the stat becomes more and more mainstream, I can only assume they will remove the negative occurance of a sac fly from the OBP calculations.

Only a sac fly? A sac bunt does not negatively affect your OBP? I would not think the two are at all different in the stat book...

I disagree that the stat should be changed, though. No one number can be all-telling. OBP ONLY tells you how often the guy gets on base. Not how effective he is while doing it.

This makes me think of another issue...

If the batter reaches on an error, is that a + or - to OBP? How about fielders choice?

Only wikipedia, so take it for what it's worth.....

On-base percentage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

....yeah, It's only sac flys that count negatively for OBP.....I didn't even think they counted negatively until just now when you mentioned it.....

The wiki article mentions when SF became a seperate stat and to seperate it out as not as important as a sac bunt (because the bunt is an offensive strategy not to be held against the batter) .....ok, so we should get rid of all the rbi groundouts then.....lol

Edit: and to add to your question about the errors, I think they count negatively towards BA and OBP...nothing in the formulas would have any distinction....it's a plate appearance that the batter did not get a hit, walk, or hbp.

Apparently, Aramis Ramirez said no to his All Star invitation to rather spend time with family. Justifies the Rolen selection somewhat.

What do you guys think of all the players, even without injuries, bailing on the game? Is it time to revamp the whole event?

Jeter goes 5 for 5 but can't play? Rivera saves a game yesterday, can't play?

Ramirez wants to play with his kids?

Pretty soon it'll be the Second Tier Guys game as all the superstars will just wave it off and say 'no thanks'

2011 MLB All-Star Game: Pablo Sandoval, Miguel Montero, Kevin Correia, Craig Kimbrel, David Robertson, Alexi Ogando, Michael Pineda, Ricky Romero added to rosters - ESPN

16 (!) players selected won't be there.

I'm sure some day we'll be telling our kids about watching David Robertson and Kevin Correia in the AllStar Game.

In hockey, even injured players (except for critical injuries) have to show up for the fan festivities. If they don't show up they are fined for missing the event. Some players still take the fine and don't show up.

The only way I could see more players showing up is by making the AS Game at the end of the season and doling out fines for those who don't show. If they did this though, they'd obviously have to waive the Playoff HFA angle.....which I think would be a good thing.

It's a thought but the ASB is pretty important to the rhythm of the long grind, players need the break. And look how little anyone cares about the football ASG at the end of its season.

Total agreement on not using the game for HFA. I read an idea so good it's no surprise they don't use it: have the league with the best interleague record that year get HFA. Simple, fair, and the teams are already trying to win those games.

Used to be that the ASG was a players only chance to show his stuff on a national stage. With the orders of magnitude greater exposure for even small market players, it's just not that important to most players.

Bobby Valentine brought up an interesting point last night. To paraphrase, he said that if the players aren't on the DL and don't play in the game, they should have to donate their All-Star bonus to charity. I don't know if I favor that over other ideas, but it's an interesting one.

I like the team with the better regular season record getting home field advantage in the World Series, but the combined inter-league record idea is a good one, too. I think everyone agrees that having it determined by an exhibition game is pretty stupid.

The bottom line is that I can't fault a guy for wanting to stay home and play with his kids, but I always thought the All-Star Weekend was a great place to bring the whole family. Most of the fun of the Home Run Derby is watching the looks on the major leaguers' kids' faces on the sidelines.

EDIT: That was definitely the first time I ever saw or heard of Prince Fielder. Kind of cool.

Excellent point. How to fix?

Another good post. I love this place.
