MOSCOW -- A Russian hockey player has died after being hit in the head by the puck during a game, his club and the league said Tuesday. He was 19.

Defenseman Timur Faizutdinov was playing for Dynamo St. Petersburg's junior team in a playoff game against Loko Yaroslavl on Friday when he was struck by a puck hit from the neutral zone.

Faizutdinov collapsed and was treated on the ice by the team doctor and paramedics before being taken to a hospital in the city of Yaroslavl.

The Junior Hockey League said Faizutdinov died Tuesday after "doctors fought for Timur's life over the course of three days."

Dynamo said upcoming games in competitions, including the Kontinental Hockey League, will begin with a minute's silence for Faizutdinov.

Damn. My family comes from Yaroslavl so just hits close to home. RIP Timur

That's terrible. The play was so much more innocuous than you would think.

It just must have hit him in a terrible spot (makes me wonder if his carotid artery was badly injured as the puck looks like it hit him in the neck area and the doctors couldn't do anything to save him despite their efforts).

yeah, i had originally read that it was a slapshot to the head.
this was just a freak accident.

I'm sure everyone who has played the game for any amount of time has been beaned with a shot like that.

Sad
It looks like just a dump in and both sides going for a line change. Total freak play.

Definitely couldn't have hit him in the head as stated. If that hit his helmet he would've just flinched and continued skating. Interested to see exactly what happened. It looks like it caught him just under the helmet as his helmet looks like it partially came off.

Very sad story.

Espen Knutsen of the Blue Jackets shot a puck that was deflected into the crowd. That puck happened to hit a 13 year old girl in the crowd exactly the wrong way and she died. Espen never really recovered from the guilt he felt, and it was literally in no way his fault.

I used to play goal. One night, a slapper from the point was coming straight at my head. It was over the net, so I ducked. The puck hit the glass behind me and broke it.

Wear your helmet, wear a face mask and buckle your chin strap.

Yeah but that was a little girl who wasn't paying attention in a market that did not understand the game.

(remember that argument?)

That happened in baseball just a couple of years ago which led to the MLB adopted those large nets.

Couldn't imagine being the person to hit the ball/puck that led to someone's death or handicap. I'm not sure how you recover from that.

I know a player for Sevilla had a heart attack on the soccer field and died, and at least 2 players from that game retired early afterwards. I just can't imagine.
