I won't answer for Cam but for me, he's just damaged goods at a position we don't need him. Whatever scrub we offer the Red Sox would never take.

This is where I sit.

I simply do not want him. He doesn't fit.

Old? Check.
Injured? Check.
Over paid? Check.
Position of depth? Check.

Where do I sign up?

Ok, all that said (and nice work Cam): what WOULD you trade for him? And no, Huff/RoRo isn't an option.

The numbers aren't being kind to Youk. He's probably a better fit for the Phillies, but they already have a number of aging injury prone players. So will they really be interested?

A lot would depend on the type of clubhouse presence Youk brings...he's kind of a red-ass Jeff Kent type player, right? Ok if he's playing well, but might not fly here otherwise. I think the Sox would have to take Huff, or Zito off our hands - preferably both. I'd throw in Schierholtz as a quality "cheap" player - because his body language lately tells me he needs a change of scenery.

I can see Youk still having value in a right-handed platoon situation.

In summary, you are saying

Huff / Zito / Nate

for

KY

While the $$ ends up being GREAT for the G's (so much so that the $ox would not go for it), we lose a top-flight #4 OF and a SP who appears to be re-finding himself (never mind his NT-clause) for a Huff replacement AT BEST.

We have no one in the wings ready to take Zito's spot in the rotation. Do you want to see Hacker, Kamp, Petit, etc trotted out there every 5th day? I don't.

Timmy is the new Zito, so we got that covered. The tough part is finding the new Timmy. Seriously though, Zito is going to get shelled in his next two starts. I love that he's started out well, but he's got nothing left in the tank. Fifth starter is a hole regardless, but it would be nice to have an extra 47M to help fill that hole. I think it can be filled for less than that.

I'd hate to see Nate go, but I think he could thrive in Boston, and I think the Giants generally like him, but his window of opportunity with the Giants is just about closed now. Blanco is the better fourth outfielder. Pill looks serviceable in left. And Belt can fill in in left and right. I think the OF is covered. The Giants will need room soon for Kieschnick, and there is always Christian if needed. Trade or no trade, I don't think Nate will be back next year unless he can start hitting for power, or getting on base at a higher rate.

If you can move Nate and Huff there is room for a RHB. Really, I'm just trying to clear roster space for guys who might have a future with the Giants. Youk would not be resigned, obviously.

I guess I just keep coming back to the fact that KY is simply not a good fit, and I do not want to give up ANYTHING of value to get him. I would need a deal where if he were to be taken out, the remainder of the deal would have to be a net positive for the Gs.

Zito is gone after next year. Trading him this year would help ownership, but it would not help the team (read, the fans). We would not be able to spend his salary on a new SP for this year.

I have no prob with dealing Nate. Kiesch, Peggy, Christian, CD, Brown... Nate is expendable. BUT... He is an asset. We should be able to AT LEAST get a near MLB ready B-level relief prospect in return.

Thanks. Every now and then a blind squirrel finds a nut.

I honestly do not see a fit between the two teams. I know the Red Sux are currently light on LH bats, but their DL is FULL of those guys - Ellsbury, Crawford and Ryan Kalish are all out right now - so the idea that Nate would be a good fit is about as realistic as thinking that Youkilis would be a good fit in SF.

And as bad as Zito's contract is, the Red Sux have Lackey. Zito's remaining year plus his buyout ($27 mil total) is less total money than what Boston owes Lackey ($30.75 mil). So they are not taking on Zito without purging Lackey.

The Giants need to move on and find another way to replace Panda until he comes back. Youkilis just ain't the answer.

You don't think a team will be looking to shed salary at the half-way point this year?

You're a fan categorical syllogism, I see.

But we would have a BP machine until then (Zito is NOT a BP machine so far this year). Also, would we be able to get enough of a player (pitcher?) back to make up for the loses that have been accrued by the loss of Zito? Would sending cash as part of the deal mean we would not have to part with ToJo/Brown/Kiesch/Peggy/Adrianza/Hembree/etc/etc/etc?

See me after Zito gets through AZ and Mil.

You're assuming that Zito will continue to pitch well.

Where did those names come from? Not me.

In my conception of the deal, the Sox and the Giants are simply swapping public relation problems. With Nate as the sweetner. And then there's a small chance Youk is useful to the Giants, and the same with Zito for the Sox.

I'd take the phillies off the list of teams that might want Youkilis.

“The way we’re playing is unacceptable,” Amaro said. “We’re always looking to improve the club, but we have to start by doing it in-house. Guys have to play better. There are players with talent here. Sometimes players need to take it upon themselves to perform better.”

The Phils entered the season with a $174 million payroll, second-highest in the majors, and just shy of the $178 million luxury-tax threshold. Phillies officials have said publicly that they’d like to avoid paying the tax. That could make it difficult, though not impossible, for Amaro to improve the team during the July trade season.

“We can be buyers,” he said. “It just depends on how creative I can be.”

But he added, if things don’t turn around, he could look to subtract talent, not add.

“July is so far ahead,” Amaro said. “We just have to get on track. But if July comes and we’re playing like this, we’ll be sellers. How we play now will determine whether we’ll be buyers or sellers in July.”

I don't think that "kicking da tires at da end of da day" on Youklis is necessarily a bad thing, completely dependent on what BOS is looking for in return. If it's a salary dump, go fuck yourself, not interested. If they are willing to pay some/half of KY contract for marginal prospects, sure. It all depends on what the asking price is. Then spot start him in bandbox stadiums like Great American Park just to make him feel more at home =)

Someone has to keep Aristotle's ideas alive.

We thank you, of course. Much like we thank the Catholic Church for keeping alive Aristotle's ideas on metaphysics via the doctrine of transubstantiation.

Wow. That was brilliant. Just before I typed this response, I stood up in my cube and gave you a golf clap. The guy in the cube across the aisle looked at me funny, wondering why I stood and started clapping for no reason. I just turned and said, "unless YOU can talk about the doctrine of transubstantiation, mind your own fucking business."

Then I sat down and typed this message.

I wish the Giants would trade Zito to Boston for Beckett and make Boston take on half of Beckett's salary. Zito probably wouldn't go. Damn no trade clause

Yeah, it's Zito's NTC that prevents that deal. Shouldn't Boston throw in Pedroia?

Look where I live. I know what is happening here in the Boston area. Beckett is as good as gone and Beckett will be hard to move. His numbers are crap, he is injured a lot, and he is considered the ring leader of the Chicken and Beer melt down last September. Beckett is getting all the blame for corrupting Lester and Buchholz.

In fans minds it is addition by subtraction. In fact, Zito and Soriano contracts were mentioned by ESPN as the type of contract that would be headed back to Boston on a trade. But, they said even that might not be enough. Teams are looking at Beckett as a cancer and think he will ruin the pitching rotation of any team he goes to.
