Don't you just know that if Youk came to the Giants he'd become a hacker. That cavernous triples alley would get into his head, Bochy would grumble about staying aggressive, and pretty soon he'd be hacking at slop in the dirt. You can kiss that lofty OBP good-bye.

Sox were short on LHH outfielders at the beginning of the season. Not sure if they filled that hole. And Nate is a ".300" hitter in Boston.

And Youk is a proven 2-4 WAR guy. Nate's proven little at the ML level.

Barnes, Bogarts, Ruanado, and Middlesbrooks are all "top prospects". I get what you're trying to say, but their farm, and it's depth, make ours look laughable.

Isn't he the guy who makes Youk expendable. After we raped them for Javier, I'd be surprised if they picked up the phone when SabeySabes calls.

Yes, I mis read his post thinking he meant Boston had nothing desirable, period.

And I think we got Ramon Ramirez from Boston. Lopez was from the Pirates for Martinez and Bowker.

Didn't you label Reyes "a .217 hitter" when Cain walked him the other day? By that logic, Youkilis is a -2.5 WAR player.

Lopez for Martinez and Bowker

Ramirez for Turpen

All three guys are minor league journeymen at best now. Bowker is gone; Mortinez is with his 4th team; Turpen is with his 4th team.

I would say both of those trades were HRs.

If Sabes knows one thing, it's how to find undervalued relief arms for nothing, or close to nothing.

Hensley Marlins trash heap for free (maybe too early for that call, but as of now he looks solid)
Lopez You already touched on that
Mota circa 2010/11
Ramirez Same as Lopez
Wilson 20 something round pick
Romo Same story as Wilson
Casilla Off the A's trash heap for free

The Lopez and Ramirez trades give me faith that Sabes won't go out and deal for a "big name" reliever. I'm expecting some smaller trades come early summer, with Hembree up by the AS break.

Actually the Giants are now a pretty young team, aren't they?

Huff isn't but he's not playing, Vogelsong isn't young but he's not injury prone, and Franchez...well ok, Franchez

But still, our team is one of the younger ones around now.

:dunce:

No one has touched this, but Youkilis would never be an effective replacement for Panda because he is currently injured and already was struggling with the glove. The guy can no longer play an adequate 3B. The guy is sub-par defensively and is only going to get worse. The Giants need to find a guy who can pick it and play 3B on days when Panda is at 1B or not in the lineup. Youkilis was that guy back in 2009. But unless Marty McFly and Doc Brown are currently working in the Giants' front office, adding that broken down old fuck is the exact wrong thing to do. Youkilis would only add to the logjam at 1B, which is not the position the Giants need to fill.

Some people were joking about trading Zito for Youk - at this point, Zito is more effective than Youkilis. The only reason to trade Zito is to dump his contract (which I would totally do). But the Giants would be losing out in this deal because they have no one to replace Zito in the rotation right now.*

My bad, you are absolutely correct. Brain fart. I think Lopez pitched for the Sux just prior to the Bucs. He and RamRam were teammates.

I may have, but I don't think Reyes will be a .217 hitter at the end of the year. Youkilis would be someone we'd have for 5+ months, not one AB. Cain was pitching to a player in a slump and my point was that you can't walk a slumping player. I'm pretty confident that:

1. It's best not to walk slumping hitters; and
2. Youk's WAR at the end of the year will be in the 2-3 range.

1. is exactly right

2. I'm pretty skeptical

I knew you go there. Reyes broke out of his slump the day before ( two hits in four AB). Since that day, he's been a .400 OBP player.

Youkilis is a .300 hitter because he plays in Boston. In 2011, the guy was a .320/.426/.989 hitter at home in 222 at-bats and a .191/.317/.667 hitter on the road in 209 at-bats.

Sure you can look back on other seasons and show better splits, but in those other seasons, he wasn't getting old. He hadn't reached the point where his skills were diminishing. He reached that point last year and he is well beyond the point of no return now. Fenway is the only ML ballpark in America where Youkilis will continue to be a .300 hitter.

Good points. It looks like he's fallen off a cliff since July 2011.

Ok, new info. Still a really bad time to walk a guy. Nonetheless, I see your point.

Ok, all that said (and nice work Cam): what WOULD you trade for him? And no, Huff/RoRo isn't an option.

I won't answer for Cam but for me, he's just damaged goods at a position we don't need him. Whatever scrub we offer the Red Sox would never take.
