Brilliant move, IMO... Lester has proven he can anchor a rotation... He knows Theo Epstein will do what it takes to win now & in the future... He'll be even better in the NL...

To win a WS in Chicago & Boston would put his career into legendary status.

The Cubs could be in the World Series by 2018.

No surprise really IMO but got to think Boston got to be looking at signing another starter or 2 relatively soon.

I love seeing him go to the NL Central. Opening Day at the new Friendly Confines is going to be exciting. I'm going back this year.

Make it official, we need this domino to fall. Would be great for things to be set in motion prior to the winter meetings.

And he'll never be heard from again since the Cubs aren't relevant.

Yeah they is a little steep in my opinion. However it doesn't change the fact the Sox screwed themselves.

Which is another interesting question.... Lester indicated he would take a home-town discount last winter... The Sox insulted him with a 4 year $70m offer (approx)....

What would he have accepted if they hadn't pissed him off right out of the gate?

I'm thinking they could have gotten a five year deal done... probably around $105-$110m...

Now if they 'really' want him, it'll take a sixth year and a bit more cash....

And now it's being reported that Jason Hammel signed a 2 year deal with the Cubs. Does this take Lester off the table?

Reports are he signed a 2 year deal for 18 million with a third year option. This is a career 59-70 4.60 era pitcher. First half of last year was his contract push. Got dealt to the A's and folded under playoff pressure.

I highly doubt this is a drop in the bucket signing.

Reports are LA Dodgers are up to 5/170 for Lester, Cubs should be out of it just for that reason. Nobody should be in at Lester for that money and the Dodgers will be giving it to a 3/4 in the rotation.

Yeah I never understood the initial offer. Sure they want to "save" money but that's too much of a home town discount, espcially considering all Lester has done for Boston!

In all fairness, he did pitch well for much of his tenure in Oakland...he was awful in his first 4 starts but rebounded after that.

First 4 starts with Oakland: 9.53 ERA, .351 BAA, 2.11 WHIP
Last 9 starts with Oakland: 2.46 ERA, 2.15 BAA, 1.01WHIP

He was just so bad in those 4 starts that it was hard to 'salvage' his stats with Oakland.

I'm hearing this is also to try to drive up the price for another team up north  and LA isn't truly interested. Friggin' bastards!!

Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com was told by executives from one major league team that Jon Lester's representatives are giving the process a little more time in hopes that one of the teams involved will increase their offer to $150 million.
As of right now, it's believed that no team has gone beyond $140 million for six seasons. While many have pegged the Red Sox as a slight favorite, they are believed to be in the range of $130 million. The inclusion of a seventh year -- or a vesting option for a seventh year -- could also help sway Lester and his representatives.

Not sure that LA offer is legit:suds:
