great question. My guess would be that guys would be given some severance. Those contracts aren't guaranteed so it's quite likely that a couple hundred guys throughout baseball would be DFA'd. A great opportunity for a savvy FO to pick up some cheap talent.

So, every player on both teams is eligible through the draft and if they are picked, the team takes on the salary as well? And if they aren't picked, they would be granted some severance and become FA's?

If teams are contracted to 28 teams. My guess would be the Brewers they used to be in the AL, was surprised they chose the Astros.

ALE: NYY, BOS, TOR, BAL, CHW, DET, CLE
ALW: LAA, TEX, HOU, MIL, KC, SEA, MIN
NLE: NYM, PHI, ATL, PIT, WAS, FLA, CIN
NLW: SF, LAD, SD, AZ, CHI, ROX, STL

2 Divisions per league, 2 division winners 1st round bye. Top 4 non - division winners play a best of 3 in the higher seeds ball park (6@3, 5@4). Expand the roster to 27, bring back scheduled double headers.

Or Preferably move the Rays to NJ, A's to Portland. Expand to Charlotte and Las Vegas.

ALE: NYY, BOS, TOR, BAL, CHW, DET, CLE, NJ
ALW: LAA, TEX, HOU, LV, KC, SEA, MIN, POR
NLE: NYM, PHI, ATL, PIT, WAS, FLA, CIN, CHA
NLW: SF, LAD, SD, AZ, CHI, MIL, STL, ROX

Same playoff set up as above.

No inter league play in either scenario.

If they get to 32 teams don't you have to go NFL style, 8 divisions of 4, no wild cards?

This is all really crazy hypothetical, especially contraction talk. That ain't happening. Baseball revenues have exploded under Selig (that's why he keeps getting re-upped), and after revenue sharing every team makes money.

I think it's far more likely we get to 32 teams in say 10 years.

That's my understanding. Obviously, several would be drafted/picked up and displace players already with clubs. 300 guys would be out of jobs; only some of them would be A'ss or Rays

Interesting. Obviously, its a very dark situation for contracting MLB teams. Many, many people lose jobs and I would HATE to have my beloved team suddenly go away... but I'm not going to lie, the possibility of nabbing a solid player for nada would be sweet.

But yes as someone said above, contraction is not likely in the near future.

I live in Charlotte. The NBA franchise (Bobcats) here has gotta be hurting financially. Not only do they suck on the court, but the taxpaying voters here were VERY turned off when the city rammed through the building of Time Warner Arena (where the Bobcats play) at taxpayer expense in the downtown area after the Hornets (when they were here) routinely led the league in attendance with their more suburban-friendly venue.

Something similar would have to happen (a taxpayer-funded building of a downtown baseball stadium) for an MLB franchise to move here and it would NOT go well at all with the voters. Charlotte was built on the big banks here, and they have taken some big hits in recent years.

Also, it may sound small potatoes, but Charlotte University (aka UNC Charlotte) is in the midst of spinning up a Div I NCAA football team, including the building of a a new stadium for them. There is only so much sports growth this city can handle, IMHO.

In short, I don't think Charlotte would have the fan base for a successful MLB franchise.

In fact, if anything, I think the NBA may have some contraction issues to deal with soon. It is my understanding that 2/3 of the teams lose money, though that can mean a lot of things in an accounting sense, depending on who is asking and what you want to tell them.

Thanks for the Charlotte knowledge...it just sticks out as a pretty populated area but what you say makes sense.

Totally agree re NBA they have much bigger problems. I don't know if it's 2/3 of the teams losing money but it's at least 1/3.

Side bar: anyone here care to guess (no fair googling) what David Stern makes every year?

It's around $20 million. I remember seeing a story about it a while ago right after it came out that Roger Goodell pocketed roughly the same amount for his services last year.

Naw dude, it's even better than that...

Stern's contract each year is that he gets paid $1 million more than the highest paid player in the league that year.

The players don't mind, incents him to get them paid more.

The man is a demon genius.

If you have too many divisions there is a chance a sub .500 team makes the playoffs and a 90 win team doesn't. If you do 2 divisions per league with 4 WC you virtually guarantee that the top 6 teams make the playoffs.

The NFL has to have 4 divisions because there are so few games, so you have to put up with the Seahawks making the playoffs at 7-9 ahead of 10-6 Giants and 10-6 Bucs.

That's a very good point. It'll be interesting...

Although there would presumably be unbalanced scheduling still, so the 4 teams in each division would play each other a bunch, and unless they all really stink one of them should win enough of those games to eke records over .500

Who knows...

How much extra money does he make from endorsing Wal-Mart and tuna that isn't dolphin safe?

Yeah, the endorsements are where the star players actually make more than Stern.

Or did you want to show me your David Stern-branded Nikes? Imagine that logo on your heel.

It would be a long shot to get a sub .500 team to win the division, it only happened once in the NFL (Several .500 teams) but the point still stands that the fewer division winners there are and using WC to fill in the playoff spots guarantees the best teams to be in the playoffs and eliminates the luck your way into the playoffs for being in a weak division.

2007 both Padres and Mets missed the Playoffs with higher Win% then Cubs.

In 2008 the Dodgers won the division with a .519 Win%, both the Mets and Astros had better Win% yet didn't make the playoffs.

2009 Rangers had a higher Win% then the Twins yet Twins made the playoffs.

2010 and 2011 the top teams in both leagues made the playoffs.

According to Madden, there is some legitimate sentiment by several owners to contract the Rays and the I's. They're tired of supporting them through revenue sharing.

The 2011 CBA already addresses part of that. According to reports:

The fifteen Clubs in the largest markets will be disqualified from receiving revenue sharing by 2016. The revenue sharing funds that would have been distributed to the disqualified Clubs will be refunded to the payor Clubs, except that payor Clubs that have exceeded the CBT threshold two or more consecutive times will forfeit some or all of their refund.

tz,

Marco (at least the name) is a known poster in Giants Blog-dom. He also does not post ANYTHING like "it".

All your noobs DO NOT belong to it

I'm pretty sure he owns the record for bans on the MLB Giants board and GIANTSBOARD.
