Totally subjective observation on my part, but I can't help but wonder if he is a little jealous of the attention that Lincecum gets, and that Cain perceives himself to be a bit of a second fiddle - not as loved as Timmy, not as well-paid as Timmy, not as cool as Timmy, and perhaps, just not as good as Timmy. Maybe he's willing to go somewhere else where he will be the #1, and get out from under Timmy's shadow.
Or, he could like pitching in the shadows. Some guys don't want the attention, and Lincecum definitely gets more than his fair share. That's purely speculation on my part, though. Cain is not an "ace" in the same light as Verlander, Tim, Doc, Felix, Kershaw ect... but he's also not just a good number 2. He's floating around in this weird void between true #1 and great #2.
As for the fair value comment, I don't take that to mean he's seeking Zito money. I just think he's throwing it out there that he's not signing some Danks like contract, and that he expects to receive a fair pay day. On precedent alone he's guaranteed Lackey/Burrnett/Weaver/Wilson money, so those contracts are probably good comparables of the bare minimum he would accept.
Cain is going to end up with 5/100 in the next couple of weeks.
5/100 is fine by mine. Cain is a workhorse and I'm all for signing him up a little longer.
Deep down inside I don't think Tim will sign any long term contracts. I really think that he'll float for two years at a time. As long as we offer a fair wage I'm guessing he stays a Giant! What worries me is exactly that. In two years will we be looking at 25M per .....
Yeah - I guess the next two years will tell the tale. IMHO I think the idea of a 'hometown discount' isn't all that likely an option from a professional athlete. I think most want to be paid what they think 'fair return' actually is. They may in fact consider an offer a little below what they would like but I still think it has to reach that level of they deem is 'fair'. This is where I feel Cain is at the moment. I think it was Tzill that thought it would be 5/100. I agree and I'm guessing Cain would think it's a fair offer as well. .
Fine by me, that's the going rate and that's why we skimped in other areas.
Such confidence! Not always right, but never in doubt.

Cain is second fiddle to Lincecum and always will be with the Giants. He doesn't seem like someone who craves the spotlight though. He just wants a fair deal.

I would love it if this happened. Cain is a stalwart. With a 5 year contract we shouldn't see too much downside or risk of injury and the money is perfect. I still wonder if Cain would accept this.
True, but let's not forget that during the glorious playoffs and WS of 2010, Cain's ERA was equal to Blutarsky's GPA:
"Zero...point...zero!"[/QUOTE]
I'm sure Cain's agent won't let the Giants forget it.
