Ruf played ball at Creighton. He peaked in 2012 in his 4th year in the minors. Dylan Cozens was signed out of HS. This is his 5th year in the minors. Rhys Hoskins played baseball for Sacramento State for 3 years. This is his 3rd year in the minors.

Ruf peaked at 26 with 38 homers at Reading but never hit them again at that rate (13 AB/HR) anywhere. Blocked by Howard at his more natural position at first, he could not get the needed ABs, even when switched to the outfield. His hitting went downhill and he never recovered.

Will Cozens and Hoskins be successful? Each is having a "Ruf" year at homer-friendly Reading and the good thing is that both are still very young. Cozens, an outfielder, must work on his strike outs or he'll end up like Ruf or Jon Singleton, .209/.334 in the PCL. Hoskins will have to compete with Joseph at first base, and may have the better chance at making it if he can hit immediately. A trade may be likely there. The Phils need a power outfielder and with a more balanced lineup, Cozens Ks may not matter. Hopefully, both can prove they can hit ML pitching.

It is easy to get exited about power hitters. Both Cozens and Hoskins are creating a stir. However if you take
away the reading ball park factor the numbers drop considerably. I think that their power numbers would
be projected at around 25 homeruns during a full year in the majors. Ruf never had a real chance to play
all season but showed he could hit around 28 home runs in a full year based on projections. Hoskins and Cozens
will need time at Lehigh before a smart decision can be made. All eyes will be upon them!
