Gordon is actually a player option and apparently he wants to be a FA.

they need to try and re-sign Zobrist and Young, while of course picking-up the options on Davis and Escobar.

with Rios, Guthrie, and Gomes gone, that's $25M off the payroll.

will the Royals try to re-sign Cueto?

No they wont even offer Cueto a contract, Vargas will be returning.

Rumor already, Cubs looking at Gordon, Royals won't be able to match an offer from them.

Zobrist would be nice, but cheap, too old, same with Young.

Obviously, they'll take the option on Escobar and Davis, but after those two, I think Zobrist is the most important piece to try to retain.

I'd be surprised if Rios doesn't take his option and Guthrie will cost $3.2m to buyout.

Rios is a mutual option and i don't think the Royals will be mutually interested at that price. his buyout is only $1.5M.

Yeah, Rios is mutual. I may not have been fully awake yet.

"The Royals already know they will not be trying to retain Johnny Cueto. They expect his free-agent price tag to go beyond their comfort level and, also, they have seen enough of his inconsistency to be worried about trying to keep him long term anyway."

but pretty obvious before I found this quote

Pardon the ignorance...I know the Royals don't spend a ton but I didn't know if their recent draft/developmental success had ownership singing another tune.

they have raise payroll every year for the last 4 seasons but are pretty maxed out for them. Plus they have Vargas, Edison, Ventura, Duffy...they will save and either sign Young or another 5th starter and make a play for Gordon instead.

What are you expecting from Vargas next year? Wasn't his TJ surgery after the All-Star break?

everything i've read has Gordon going to the Red Sox or Angels. any indication he would consider staying with KC at a discounted long-term deal?

Gordon has maintained wanting to stay in KC, so I wouldn't be surprised if he's willing to give a discount, but I still don't know if the Royals will be able to afford him. I also wonder if they will be willing to give any one player that big of a chunk. I'd like to have both back, but unless they can find a creative way to unload Infante, I think it will ultimately come down to Zobrist or Gordon.

Gordo is 5 years younger. Also both will be on the older side in the corner outfielder market. I wonder where that will put their relative values.

Doubt they bring back Cueto. Got to think they'll try and keep Gordon.

Rios and Guthrie have been released.

Yeah, I really don't see them even making an attempt at Cueto.

Look for a push to keep both Gordo and Zobrist. And trying to unload Infante.

It would be a dream if they found someone to take Infante, but it won't happen.

Telling you, there will be zero attempt at Cueto and it would be bad money to do so, let him go earn his payday. Edison, Vargas, Ventura, Duffy and Medlen will be KC starting 5 opening day w/ maybe Young returning as LR

Gordon is an outside chance, did hear Theo thinking about him as well. If Gordon was smart, he would sign with KC for the rest of his career and be the next George Brett in this area. Nice VP spot after playing days.

Zobrist is most likely and maybe Orlando/Dyson covering the other OF spot.

KC will sign Zobrist and find 1 FA rehab project like Melky, Frenchy, Morales, Medlen

Yeah the royals are stuckwin Infante.

I think the Angels go nuts for Gordon. He's their guy. He's the poor man's heyward (who the angels can't afford with their other big money deals).
