The good news for the Caps is they played terribly for w periods tonight and still barely lost. The bad news I don't think the Penguins played so well either.

Neither team has been able to find their groove because the other is countering so well. Eventually I think the lack of depth on D hits one team hard and results in a more open game.

Orpik gets 3. Can't help but wonder if they added a game because they effed up the Wilson one.

Bellemaire piledriver was one game, and Orpik's elbow was three times that?

Okaaaay.

exactly why I'm surprised. Not saying that Orpik's wasn't worth 3 games, but the precedent was set.
Yeah I am amazed they gave three to Orpik.
I mentioned this on the Pens board but knowing how scr*wed the NHL logic is, I truly thought he would only get more that one game if that was the elmination game and would kick in next year.

The league has some weird internal logic, and they just couldn't find an excuse to let Orpik off light. I'm sure they wanted to, but it ticked all the boxes:
  • Late hit. Puck long gone.
  • Primary contact to the head.
  • Contact with elbow or at least forearm.
  • Easily avoidable.
  • Injury to Maatta. He "looks out" and doesn't return.
  • No major called on the play.
  • Day after they let Wilson off light.
I think the first point might be the worst. There was just no justification to attempt the hit, that Orpik has to take full responsibility for the result.

As long as the Caps don't replace Orpik with Weber, the suspension is a blessing.

You're not wrong...he's been great for the Pens. But I get the sneaking suspicion that Weber may make an appearance for one of those three. Orlov isn't super worrisome from my perspective, but he doesn't handle the puck like a grenade and doesn't have cement in his skates.

Surprised they actually gave Orpik more than 1 game. He definitely deserves it, but I'm surprised.

That was my reaction exactly. Like, I had this reaction in exactly these words, I mean.

2 games played, 2 players disciplined by the NHL. Washington is playing like they think it's still the '60s or the '70s. Come to think of it, with the trouble they're having just trying to keep up with the youth and speed of Pittsburgh, these Caps are looking like they're in their 60s and 70s...

The Pens better be on best behavior tonight. If there's one thing in which the NHL shows consistency, it's evening things up.

Glad to see Orpik was giving 3 games. I think for once.....NHL got it right. Who goes in his place? Weber?

The funny thing is Trotz is essentially an anagram of Torts (if you flip a 's' for a 'z').

“I’m disappointed obviously with the suspension,” Trotz said. “Looking at it as Brooks said, it was a little bit late. I’m more disappointed in the length than anything. Dmitry Orlov (hit from Pierre-Edouard Bellemare) in the previous series, I thought it was career-ending. They get one game.

“I’m disappointed, but I’m not surprised based on who we’re playing and all that. We’ll just go forward.”

When asked to clarify his statement, making sure he meant to lob such an accusation, Trotz doubled down in his reply: “Yes. Take it for whatever you want.”
