Round 1: #13 DT Da’Ron Payne

Seems like they blew an opportunity - considering the team picking right after them traded down to 27 and got a 5th rounder plus... a 2019 1st round pick. It seemed pretty clear that Payne was a reach at 13. The definition of filling a need over BPA. Gruden's observations were telling - he said nothing about taking the best player. He said they picked him because they have to defend Elliot and Barkley for years to come. On the positive side, Payne has upside since he's just 20, and if you don't care about BPA then you got the guy that fills the biggest need.

You know I don’t believe in reaching. Hell, if there is a better player than a RB in the second for us, I skip RB. I don’t think there is or will be, so the value for me will be at RB.

Philly didnt, They traded out of the first. Guess they didnt see any one they needed.

Again.. BPA is a catch phrase. Because what you or I see as the best player available has to be balanced against team need and fit. Hell for all we know Lamar Jackson becomes a HOF QB that almost every team passed on. That would clearly make him one of the BPA of this draft. But teams didnt NEED a QB that passed on him.

Payne was the best player available at a position of need. It matched up that he was there at 13. Could we have tried to trade down?? Sure. But nothing says oh damn like trading down, then having another team trade one spot over you to take the guy you had pegged.

I think our board realistically started with Vea and Payne, and depending on who you talked to in the front office, you might get either of them as the BPA at 13 who also filled a position of need.

Im thrilled with the pick as this is the guy I was hoping for. Now if by some chance Guice is still on the board at 44, hopefully Bruce manages to once again not outsmart himself and just makes the pick.

By the way saints traded up for Davenport for a reason. Because we whiffed on him probably. They gave up a good amount to grab Davenport. Thoughts?

That was a horrible trade for them. And i wouldve been pissed if we took davenport.

Now if we could have been on the trade down side of a deal with the Saints that wouldve been great.

I don't know, but what I do know... there were several TRADES. That's what smart organizations do when there's a big difference between need and BPA. The problem wasn't necessarily in picking Payne; it was picking Payne too high, imo. Again, the team picking 14th got the 27th pick, Saints' 5th pick, and Saints 2019 1st rounder. Would you rather have Payne than those 3 picks?

Exactly, ya beat me to it. And considering we had the pick before, we "should" have been able to do it.
